hi all
basically i want out of bt im 6mths through an 18mth contract and tried telling them id lost my job so i wanted to cancel, but thats going to cost me £300 NOT. i want sky tv which id get FREE broadband with for CHEAPER than im paying bt just for my broadband.

anyway im paying £33.50 per month which i think is way 2 high and was wondering if any clever person had sucessfuly got out of a contract with them before???

or if im entitled to at least go on a cheaper package with them (last resort) as i dont really do much downloading or anything so i feel im just wasting money

I am currently with BT broadband around 5 months into an 18 month contract (option 1). I know they are no where near the cheapest.

I have just read that from the 1st July the excess usage allowance is increasing from 30p per GB to 60p per GB. Should I be able to get out of the contract to go to a cheaper provider based on that change. From what I can see the following should apply:
    11. If you end your agreement for the service during the relevant minimum period you will have to pay an charge by way of compensation to us, for ending it early unless paragraphs 9 or 10 of these service terms apply or you are ending your agreement because of a change made which is to your material disadvantage. You will find details of these charges in the price terms.
So I should be able to end the contract with no charge as the change is to my "material disadvantage" as I have been charged for excess usage last month.

Just wanted any other opinions before I phone them.

    Thanks

You've agreed to the contract so you should either see it out or pay off the remaining months. You could try downgrading the package but that might incur you starting a new contract again. You need to talk to BT about this.

In all fairness they've done nothing wrong, you can try the above that you've mentioned but in all honesty you've got no grounds as to why they should release you from the contract.

I would have thought that what you say is reasonable grounds to get out of your contract. They've changed the terms and conditions, and as such you have the choice whether to accept them or not. Whether it will be easy to cancel your contract or not is another matter!

    Hiya Claire,

Unfortunately your tied in to the contract unless various conditions occur. Keep an eye on this link as something may develop lol ;)

Considering they will also double the usage allowance from 5gb to 10gb I wouldn't hold out much hope.

Even with the 5gb to 10gb increase I would have been worse off last month downloaded a lot more than expected (32GB over the 5GB limit ).

Anyway phoned BT and didn't cancel but did upgrade to Option 3 for £22.99 per month without extending my original contract also getting a free home hub sent.

Maybe could have cancelled but didn't want to chance my luck. Also as the exchange is not unbundled there are not that many great deals to be had and I have had bad experiences with Tiscali who seem to be the cheapest unlimited option that is available to me.
