Capital One cheques show up as "Cheque 0001", "Cheque 0002" etc. They ARE free and you DO get your x days interest free.

Balance transfers - interest charged from date of transfer (no way of escaping interest).

AFAIK Cap 1 are the only providor to charge (or otherwise) cheques in this way.

I ended up with a credit balance on my Mint card a couple of months ago (collecting gambling bonuses).

I wrote myself a cheque for the balance (having checked with Mint that it would indeed be free) and it cleared with no probs or charges. Will try getting into debt (by a small amount) next month to see if it works.

BEWARE!! sometimes the cheques are free and sometimes they are not. I have a supply of free ones which I use for SBTs. I've been using them for years and there is no charge or cash advance fee. BUT last week Cap One sent me a new book of cheques and guess what? These will be treated as cash advances. So they went straight into the shredder :D

Moral: make sure which kind it is before using for SBT.

I wasn't aware that they sent cheques that were chargeable. I've only ever been sent the better variety :D
