After 6 years with BT cellnet/O2 I finally decided to do something about the my historic PAYG rates. I picked up a free Virgin mobile sim and called o2 to get my PAC. They asked me why I want to leave and I gave them my main reason- I get many voice mails and it cost me 10p to retrive them every time from 901. Also I make many cross network calls which are pretty dear with O2. As they want to retain my biz they offered me to stay on PAYG without minimum top up and switched me over to a 15p/min all day to any network and 5p/text. On top of this they start a new promotion from 30/09/2005 which they call : 'o2 treats' where you dial 2211 from your handset and you can choose all kind of new benefits which one of them is ... yes free access to voice mail no strings attached! (I got the o2 block name and direct number just in case). So well that will save me few bobs. Now.. this is look suspiciously like the Tesco mobile tariff, are they the same carrier?
Five exclamation marks the sure sign of an insane mind!!!!!

  • Tesco uses O2 as it doesn't have its own network of masts. So they've probably just put you on that tarriff instead.
  • Tesco Mobile does piggy back on o2, and is managed by o2 on behalf of Tesco.

You say they are going to charge you 15p a min call to any network .Lets say you make on average 150 calls a month.Thats going to cost you £22.50p a month and you get your voicemail free.

If you got a o2 payg online sim and top up by £10 a month you can get 100 x-net minutes and keep the £10 to use.Buy a 50 minute x-net bolt for £7.99 out of the £10 and you have got an 150 x-net minutes for £10 and still got £2.01p left.Ok you still have to pay for your voicemail, but if you did this you would be £12.50p better off,and itwould take a 125 voicemail calls to use up.Also if o2 are giving free voicemail on payg online from the 30/9/05 you would be miles better off.

    Yes!

You are correct the tariff you have been offered does look like the Tesco Value Sim tariff.

I guess this also shows yet again O2 looking after its existing customers!!!

How are they looking after existing customers by giving them this tariff?

Could even be copying Easymobile ;) .

There offering existing customers the same deals there finding with other networks.. ie: The Op said that they use Voicemail a lot therefore O2 have advised he/she to call on the 30 Sep and register for the free voicemail service and they have matched the Virgin mobile tariff that he/she was going to leave and join..

Personally I would rather be with O2 than moving over to the not so reliable T-Mobile network that Virgin runs on.
  • Hi Pricefighter

I'm new here and just looking at your post where you talk about

"If you got a o2 payg online sim and top up by £10 a month you can get 100 x-net minutes...."

I've just got an O2 PAYG sim and been looking at the various options but can't see this bit anywhere - and it looks real attractive - can you help point me in the right direction please.

As long as it is a O2 Payg ONLINE .

You can either dial 2425 free from your mobile and pick this option.Or you can text to 21300 ONCALLSMSG.

You actually get a choice of calls or messages when you get this free bolt on.One text equals one minute.
