2003 Diesel Polo, 112000 miles, just serviced & timing belt done.

Doing 70, something 'happened', felt it and possibly heard a 'put' noise. Revs ok (although daren't push it), acceleration v poor, wouldn't do over 60. Engine kept 'catching', accompanied my ratchety noise & black smoke. No warning lights, normal temp.

Boss says my big end has gone, no idea what that is, what it means etc, and more importantly what it will cost  .

Any ideas folks (going into garage tomorrow but would like some idea if possible....)

No expert, but Big end = new engine or part new engine = big money or new car.

Did your engine fault light come on or anything?

Is it a turbo...VW's can have a thirst for eating turbine blades.

It sounds like big end. Usual casualty to cambelt failure - but you have just had this done - so maybe not in this instance??

Engine rebuild may not be possible and a replacement engine the easiest option. Dont go to the dealer. Find either a VW specialist or somewhere that specialises in engine replacements.

Scour Ebay, local scrapyards and national online breaker yard search engines for a replacement.

As an example, I've had a new 2.2 engine put in an Astra for £430 (engine) £130 labour ( mates rates!), £20 Oil.

Weigh up the costs of repairing and make sure you have agreed fitting costs, also that if you ask for a REPLACEMENT engine, the quote states this as it has been known that a garage will attempt to rebuild first.

Turbo. Very very rare for big ends to go on these.

Cambelt failure would've been more than a 'put' - and you wouldn't be going anywhere, at any speed....

  • Could be anything - its impossible to diagnose a noise over the internet. It might even just be a pipe off the intake.

Unlikely to be the turbo because that would result in white / grey smoke, not black smoke.
Black smoke suggests too much fuel, blue smoke a lot of oil in the exhaust.
Best wait and see what the experts who can see the car say.
