Virgin card - not happy with the insurance hard sell

My husband applied for A Virgin card online because the 0% interest offer was good. We did not tick the payment protection insurance box, I know because I checked his form before he submitted it. Today through the post we get an insurance leaflet and a thank you for taking out the insurance. I was livid, I am sure this is a deliberate ploy to get you to take out the insurance, they would not take no for an answer when my husband phoned them. In the end my husband told them he had had enough and wanted the guys name to take so that if the insurance was not cancelled we knew who he had spoken to. The guy said that they are not allowed to give out their names. This is just hard sell, has anyone else had this experience with Virgin?

I've just gotten off the phone after a 15 min conversation with an MBNA guy about my new Virgin card during which he tried to sell me the Balance Protector three time. Yet to receive the card... keeping my fingers crossed about the insurance premium. On another note this guy told me that I could do a money transfer up to 95 % of my credit limit (5000 pounds) to my current account at a 2.98% service charge which would be interest free for 15 months, just like the balance transfer. Can anyone confirm if this is true?0

Did you save a copy of your application ? If you have then you tell them that u have a copy of ur application and u can proove that u have not taken protection insurance.
Even if u have not saved a copy,just try telling them that u have a copy....:rolleyes:0 -
Thats great news for me coz I don't have a lot of debt on my other cards to do a transfer. On the other hand I could definitely do with some interest free money in the bank. Thanks for all your help.0

I also had this problem with Virgin, hard sell for the insurance. I said no on my application and when I phoned up to activate the card they tried over and over to get me to take it. I couldn't get a word in edgeways! In the end I got quite shirty and told the guy I had taken the card as it had 0% interest on balance transfers and that I was trying to save money and not spend it. He saw the light and gave in!

You are allowed to transfer up to 95% of your credit limit, that's true ... however, if you already have a balance on your card, the 95% would be calculated on your REMAINING available credit and not your credit limit itself.
For example, if you have a credit limit of £10000 and nothing on the card, then yes you can transfer £9500 to pay off bills or into your current account. However, if you have a balance of say £1000 already on your card, then you can only transfer 95% of the remaining available credit i.e 95% of £9000 = £8550.
Generally, cc companies and banks will offer Balance Transfers and Money Transfers at the same rate. The only difference between BTs and MTs is where the money is going; with BTs it's going to pay off a bill or another card, with MTs it's going into a current account.0 -

Actually only a few special cards allow Money Transfers at Balance Transfer rates - this is known as a Super Balance Transfer (SBT) and cards that allow this include Egg, Egg Money, Post Office Card, Abbey Zero and any card administered by MBNA including the Virgin range of cards.
In addition MINT periodically issue Credit Card Cheques that can be paid into a Current Account at Balance Transfer rates. However this is the least satisfactory option because the cheques cannot be requested and you don't know precisely when they will drop through the letterbox.0
