Got my carrot seeds !! Packet of Royal Chantenay........they look fairly small on the packet so hope they'll be ok.
helpinghubby - we're planting ours in containers......not sure how OH will work it our yet but we've got some medium sized pots -bout 18 inches across I think and the seed packet says it contains average of 1500 seeds !!
Says ''sow thinly in rows 12 inches apart.............not sure how they're planted in a container as far as the spacing out goes as we've not done them before.
Spinach OH planted yesterday is already coming through !!!
Chantenays in the supermarket are small...so I assume they all are. I've got normal carrots...Autumn King. Maybe they aren't suitable for pots. My pack also says sow thinly. What does that mean? I really don't know what to do. I think trial and error might be the best way
I'm also growing spinach (for my rabbits). It's easy to grow in my opinion...well based on the fact that I grew it before, so it must be if I can do it
I've also got some mini peppers, but it looks like I'm too late to grow them, but I might try anyway.0 -
Hi there
Most carrots are happy in tubs as they have softer compost to get through so tend not to grow wonky and funny shaped... which happens when they hit a stone and fork around it ..
If you get a bit heavy handed when setting don't worry as once they get going you just pull out odd ones when they are baby sized to eat and leave the others more room to get fatter.
I have 4 tubs/crates of carrots on the go so far..from parmex -the ball shaped ones to normal sized carrots... just waiting for them to fatten up

They are better in tubs as mrsmcawber states about the growing round stones and going wonky. Also if grown in quite high tubs they also evade the dreaded carrot fly (cant remember the height think it was about dustbin height).
Just a word of warning about the dreaded fly if you are going to pick carrots or when you thin out your seedlings do this as late at night as you possibly can as the devils can smell the carrots when you thin out and then fly in to infest, water afterwards this will help. Good luck0 -
Ok, really dumb question alert!!...
Can you grow carrots from planting a sprouting carrot (like a tatty?) or just from seeds?
If so where do the seeds come from? How do you gather the seeds for the next years crop?

Just from seed. No idea how to gather them but you get about 1000 seeds in a pack for about £10
