3 is chasing me...

I left '3' last October when my contract expired and I went to Orange. I paid my final bill and my DD was cancelled. Now some 8 months later they have decided that I owe them £18 of charges that I apparently failed to pay. I was not awre of this until this week I got a letter from them.

Can they send me a letter like this after 8 months of no contact?
I'm sure I don't owe anything, how can I prove this.

ask them for an itemised billing. but that's crazy.

off the topic, i left tiscalli broadband, used my mac code and went with sky. they chased me for 4 months billing, but i ignored it all until they sent a letter via third party saying they would send someone round.

best get it sorted, prove it's not you and get it cleared or refunded

Could be international roaming charges if you used the phone abroad in the couple of months before you left them; they can take a while to come through to your account.
