6 months full pay. That sounds mad!!

I think in my contract it says 15 days a year sick and that's it. BF doesn't get anything.

In my first year of employment here I was entitled to no more than five paid sick days plus five on half pay.
Second to fifth year of service it was one month full, one month half.
Now it's three months full, three months half.
If I get to ten years' service it will go up to six months of each.

I'm not sure the above is much good, though I can see the point of the low entitlement in the first year of service. A friend of mine became long-term ill only a few months into a contract with a major consultancy firm, and was on full pay for ages. She is still employed by them as they cannot sack her, and when she is ill, she gets six months full sick pay in any given year... She is genuinely ill and disabled, and life is very difficult for her, but it must be a real pain for her employer.

  • In 14 yrs of being a childminder (Self employed), I've not had ONE day off sick.
I think if you get paid for being ill, then you just abuse it.

Not in all cases. DH used to get sick pay long ago and I think he had just one day off in around 10 years.

Then in his last job, he had no sick pay but had one week off in 8 years (he was ill, and had no choice).

So some people do only take time off when they are too ill to work, and whether or not they get sick pay makes no difference at all!

In answer to the OP's question - I get no sick pay at all and DH is now with a company who give more to long term employees. I think it builds up to a maximum 6 months full and 6 months half pay after 6 years service with them. I will have to check now out of curiosity! :D

Just wondering what other people get and am I just really unlucky!!

On the contrary, I think you do quite well.

I get 1 month paid in any rolling twelve month period then SSP. The weekly paid at our place get SSP and that's it.

Is that difference between weekly and monthly paid not liable to be discriminatory? Obviously I don't know on what grounds someone would be one rather than the other, but IF the weekly paid tend to be women, then I'd say there was that danger!

I get 6 months full pay and 6 months half as I've been there over 5 years. It's reassuring, but I've never been off more than a month (after surgery).

Actually it is the other way round.

I work in consrtuction, so the weekly paid people are the site workers are all male. The salaried people are managers and admin, and about 1/3 are female.

I do not think it is discriminatory, it just part of the T&Cs of the various roles.

I am sorry but I think it is absolutely disgusting that people compare how much sick pay they get.

When people go off sick, genuine or not, it puts pressure on everyone else in the organisation.

IMO its just another abuse of the benefits this country so liberally gives out.
