Sick pay - what is normal

I'm not sick just now (in fact am on maternity leave - 4 weeks to go!!) but I was speaking to a friend last night about the benefits they and their wife get from work. He was saying that he gets up to 6 months full pay sick leave everytime he is off sick providing he returns to work for a week in between times? He seemed to think this was average and said its the same for his wife (she works for the NHS).
In my job I got 6 weeks full pay in any 12 month period which I thought was fair enough.

Just wondering what other people get and am I just really unlucky!!

Thanks

In my company I believe its 6 months on full pay then up to 5 years, yes 5 years on half pay. Dunno what happens tho if after 6 months I come back for a month then go sick again!

Your friend is wrong about the NHS sick pay. It can be six months (depending on length of service), but the entitlement is done on a rolling year basis. Therefore if you have already had five months off in the past year, you will only have one month's entitlement left.

I have seen all sorts of different entitlements, I don't think there is a norm. I know of some companies that only give SSP, some that offer ten days OSP a year, some that give six months full pay and six months half pay, and one that gives an unlimited amount at the owner's discretion (and he is v generous, as long as the employee has not taken advantage in the past).
    Gone ... or have I?

You beat me to it. ;)
  • In response to your query there is no automatic right to "sick pay" as you describe. The only legal requirement that emplyers have to do is pay is STATUTORY SICK PAY Anything else is on your contract of employment.
A lot of companies pay "sick pay" mainly larger ones.No legal requirement for them to this unless it is on your contract of employment length of sick pay can vary on this. Hope that this makes things clearer:T

I get 3 months on full pay and 3 on half pay, on a rolling year basis, but it's less than that until you've been with us for two years, I don't remember exactly how it works until then.

I've had more generous employers, but never needed to take advantage of their schemes!

thanks for the responses guys. Its not something I have ever need to use thankfully but my friends wife is just about to start her 6th month of sickness in a year and he is thinking that if she goes back for a week in between that everything will be ok! x

I have the 6 months full pay and 6 months half pay and have had it for 8 years now. Not a nightmare at all for my employers as I have only used it once for 6 days.
