Moving home with Virgin Media

Options
I currently have Virgin Media broadband on a BT phone line and I'm about to move flats. The original 12 month contract is due to run out in October 2008. Virgin Media have told me that if I want to move their broadband service to my new flat I have to agree to another 12 month contract, can they do this?

I was hoping to ditch Virgin Media in October because their speeds have been so poor.

Also I may only be in this flat for 6 months, if I have to sign up to another 12 months everytime I move I'll be stuck with VM for eternity

Yep, everytime you move house you'll start a 12 month contract. The reason being is that the installation costs for providing the service are passed during the 12 months of charges.

Alternative you have is to pay off the remaining months of your contract.
