is this ethical/cheap for me to do?

I have a new (only used 5 times) York 925 Multi Gym, costing me £250 ish ... now i am considering selling it on ebay, but as i want around £150 ish for it, i will get stung for selling fees etc.

Sooooo is it ethical & will it work if i put a low start price or put a BIN price 0f £50 (keeping ebay fees down) and put a collect in person fee of £100 in cash, also avoiding paypal fees...

or am i been a bit underhand?

thoughts plz of if its right and if it will save me ebay/paypal fees?

Its against ebays policys to do that, and your probably going to get pounced on by fellow MSE`rs for even suggesting it !!

Put it on auction starting 99p, possibly a reserve and a buy it now.

You can always end the auction 12 hours before its due to end if it doesn`t look like its going to reach as much as you hoped for !

  • Hmmm sounds a bit like those cameras for 99p + £50 p&p...

In reality, cash on collection can work well. My mate was selling a bike worth ~£1300 on ebay but got an email from a guy to say he would buy it for £1200 cash in hand if he stopped the auction. Probably worth it since you avoid the fees as you say.

    Bit naughty though! :D
  • Well..... a "collect in person" fee of £100 would be viewed (I would assume) as fee avoidance and as people don't read, listing as such could end up in a real messy one. :(

Now, assuming this is a "collect in person" item only, why would you incur any Paypal fees? after all, you will not be using Paypal, rather cash on collection. :)

I'd go with 99p and no reserve on a 10 day auction..... After all, if after 10 days it only reaches £100 then that is realistically what it is worth I am afraid. :)

look and see what similar ones have / are fetching

list it at 99p with gallery, no reserve this will cost you 30p
after 9 days if its not selling, pull the auction!

Yes....it would be both unethical and cheap for you to do that...but you already knew that before you posted didn't you??????

I've just had such a proposition put to me recently......and to be blunt I wouldn't care to deal with a person like that.

Do as others have suggested and pull the auction if it doesn't get the price you wanted....that's the best / safest way to go.

How many do you want at £150? Do think you are going to get that price? The going rate is under £100.
  • I think you'd be better putting it in local papers?
  • thanks, i didnt set out to offend or diddle anyone, im just skint n trying not to loose £10-15 on fees, i didnt realise it was against ebay rules, or that it was offensive, it was a genuine question. Thanks for all the info, i shall consider putting in on local shop notice boards..

    cheers loops

  • List it as "Buy It Now" for £200 and also use the best offer feature.

Have a start price of £150 there is little point in starting at 99p if you're not going to sell it at that price or you will have people making a bid who don't really want it.

Most activity takes place within the last hour in any case so pulling it before the 12hour cut off is a bit pointless and a pain to "watchers"

The last minute is always manic and you can gauge the interest by the amount of "watchers" as a guide

You are right about the last minute bids. I had some auctions finish last night and one had a bid in the last 2 minutes, yet hadn't had a watcher in all the 7 days of the auction!
