Local Council refuse collection

We have recently been given 2 bins from our local council. A brown bin, for waste food, garden waste and cardboard etc. A black bin, for non recyclable waste. These are collected on alternative weeks.
Yesterday it was collection day of our non recyclable waste! In 2 weeks, we have 2 extra bags, which would not fit inside the bin, so naturally I put them out with the bin. Putting both on top of the said bin. Thinking that would not be a problem, off I go to work, only to return at lunchtime to find my 2 bags sat on my garden with a sticker attached to it, indicating it was side waste and could not be collected..
So I call the number on the sticker. To be told that the council do not have the resources to collect side waste, and it costs to much money to lift these bags into the lorry. I explained that they would have had to lift the bags off the top of the bin, to get access to unload it. To be met with the reply, we cannot take side waste.
I explained that a family further up the road had loaded there bin and put 3 bags in the top of the bin, but left the lid open!! Ah he said, their bags were inside the bin, so thats ok!
I just wonder what the hell is going on with this country and the way councils are being run. Makes me sick to think I pay over £1000 a year in council tax, and they cant take the refuse. Maybe I should call the council and tell them I waont be paying all my council tax, because I dont have the resources to do so!!

Strange how differant councils work, we have 2 wheelies bins a black for household rubbish and a blue for recycling plastic bottles and cardboard/paper (all bills or letters now shredded beforehand) but not plastic bags  and if you leave staples in the cardboard they will yellow sticker you and 3 stickers and you get a visit from the council to help you understand what is recyclable, and last week we were sent out a bag for glass:eek: which has to be put out but not on the pavement but somewhere th ebin men can see it and not the night before, so now even more time spent sorting and washing rubbish and as you have pointed out no reduction in council tax and a brown bin is on the cards for garden waste too - its getting ridiculous:mad:The more i save the more i can spend:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:0 -
The whole system seems crazy... I totally understand the need to recycle, and am all for it. But it just wears my patience down when they take this attitude! In this trusted place U can erase

All pretty stupid. We still have bags, so I always go fishing before bin day so that I can chuck the heads and tails away. They take everything here. Even an old matress if you give them a few quid.NO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!0

Bags here also...much easier I think. Also have a recycling box. All the recyclables go into this one box in one big pile and the bods come round and sort it all out once a week.Baby Year 1: Oh dear...on the move

Im only in the next county to you, and its gone stupid, was a time when they were pretty helpul! The guy even told me they do not have a licence to dump household waste!! So what does he call yesterday's collection.. Also not everyone has these bins here, because of access problems!!In this trusted place U can erase

my advice is to put your bin in the back garden then phone the council and tell them someone has pinched your bin
they will deliver another bin so you will then have two
plenty of room for you rubbish :A
then all you have to do is put both the bins out on the street
and they wont have a choice but to do what there paid for
if they query why you have two bins the answer is
its a neighbours bin who is on holiday and im putting it out for them to stop the burgulars knowing they are away :rotfl: :A
hope it helps

People, you are missing the point ... there is a massive drive by councils and government to cut down on the amount of waste we generate ... we have to because of landfill problems and the fact that we all run the risk of large fines from Europe if we do not recycle enough. We all have to reduce the amount of rubbish that we generate.
There are currently trials underway that will allow the refuse collectors to weigh how much rubbish each house is generating ... I guess the next step after that is to charge more to those people who generate too much or do not recycle enough.
The funniest true life thing I have heard recently is that in my own area the council delivered blue bins to every household. Within the next few weeks umpteen were returned to the depot with notes on them suggesting a possible different strategy for where the bins should be placed. The council said thank-you very much because it had increased its stock for resale (the only way the people will be able to get them back).
If they don't get them back then it is likely that not only will they get fined but their entire neighbourhood might as well (depending on whether fines will be calculated on a per person or a neighbourhood basis). So when you look around and see a neighbour putting out 2 full bins or having loads of bags on their bin then bear in mind that it is possible that, in a few years time, YOU will have to pay extra because they generate too much rubbish. I have heard various estimates on how much these fines might be ... the highest so far has been £30-50 per household per month (after various groups have been omitted from the calculation e.g. pensioners, unemployed, low waged etc.)
Please be aware WASTE MANAGEMENT IS A MASSIVE PROBLEM FOR ALL COUNCILS and it is going to cost us all significantly more in the future.
IvanI don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!0 -
Great post Ivan
I completely agree.
My house has 6 or 7 people living in it for most of the year, we have a crazy amount of bin bags ouside our house every week. But then a family across the road that only has 3 people has more than us!!:starmod: :staradmin :starmod:I gave up jogging for my health when my thighs kept rubbing together and setting fire to my knickers:starmod: :staradmin :starmod:0 -
I wish we had bins. We have black bag collection for household waste weekly and green bag for paper, glass and cans. Cardboard and plastic bottles have to be taken to the local tip for recycling.
Binmen here come at 7am for black bags so I have to put out the night before. If animals get at the bag and tear it open they will not collect it - it's upto the householder (even though they tell you to put out overnight).
Green bags collected later in the day.
I always try to limit the black bag waste (as Ivan said think of the enviroment etc. Our landfill site locally has now been closed so we have to transport to another county). I put out max of 1 bag per week but some neighbours put out 5 or 6. Just what are they doing to generate that sort of waste. If I am fined in future because of them I will be complaining loudly!~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)

We've got a black wheelie bin and a big green box for recycling glass, cans and paper.
The bin men will not take any additional waste. We recently got a letter from the council saying the bin lid must be flat shut. If it's open due to being overloaded, they will refuse to empty the bin and you'll get a warning.. If the bin is not on the edge of your property with the handle facing the road, you will be warned. If they find recycleable material in your bin or garden rubbish, you'll be warned. 3 warnings = a £1000 fine
Most of the time the black bin is about half full for 1 adult and 2 children living here. My neighbours have 2 adults and 1 child living there, but they manage to fill 2 wheelie bins every week! I've no idea why they need two bins, but they don't put anything out for recycling and hide it all in bags in the black bins.
I have been having a clear out though recently and have discovered if the bin is full, you can get a little more in it by climbing in the bin and jumping up and downHere I go again on my own....0
