Back Up/Synchronising of Sony Ericsson W950i Using PC Suite

Hopefully someone can help me.

I'm trying to back up the contacts/messages etc from my W950i (on Vodafone) before swapping over to a new W890i (on T-Mobile). I am using SE PC Suite with a USB data cable. I have backed up/restored the W950i before but cannot get it to work this time. I have tried the following:
  1. Re-installing PC Suite with the current update but it does not recognise my W950i.
  2. When i try to connect the W950i, I get a message saying Windows has found my phone and is installing the drivers. After a few seconds another message tells me that PC Suite was unable to detect my phone and suggests I disconnect and reconnect the phone. Doing this gives the same result.
  3. I have also tried using Bluetooth but get the same result.
PC Suite picks up the W890i with no problems so I think it might be a driver problem or something wrong with my W950i software. Both phones are locked so I cannot just swap SIM cards to transfer my contacts across.

Thanks for any help offered.

Scott

Does your PC react at all when the W950i is connected ? Do you see it as a device in Windows Explorer ?

Try downloading MyPhoneExplorer from here and see if you make any more progress.

    Thanks for the repies.

I have downloaded MyPhoneExplorer and that worked to get my contacts transferred across. However when I try to back up the Calendar no entries show up on the Calendar tab and even if they did when I click on the 'Download Entire' button I get an error message 'Obex Protocol could not be initialised!. Obex Error: ERROR'. Any suggestions? Can I transfer the entries by Bluetooth directly between the two phones?

The W950i doesn't show up in Windows Explorer when connected via USB to any of the 4 USB ports. I tried both the cable I got for the W950i and W890i and still the W950i doesn't show up.

Thanks for your help and any suggestions.

MPE only had partial symbian support when i last looked at it, so that could explain the obex error.

try downloading the latest pc suite for the w950, otherwise there should be an option somewhere to send the contacts via bluetooth.

ive never used a symbian SE phone or an a200 based se phone, so the steps i give here may be slightly different and im still using one of the older a100 based k810's.

anyway to send contacts over bt on my k810, i have to highlight the contact in the phone book > more > send contact > via bluetooth

The W890i uses PC Suite 3.209.00 whereas the W950i uses PC Suite for Smartphones 1.5.8.

I would try exporting your contacts and calendar entries from the W890i using the first of these versions and re-importing to the W950i using the other.

The two versions may be able to co-exist on the same workstattion, but if you're in any doubt, uninstall one version before installing the other.

i have just had another thought - does any unknown device pop up in device manager when you connect the phone?

open device menager by pressing the windows key & r at the same time > when the run box pops up, type devmgmt.msc then press ok/enter and look for any yellow exclamation marks when you plug the w950 in
