Aldi Coffee Machine

Options
Board guides please move this if I am in the wrong area - thanks!!

Hi - We bought an Aldi Espresso machine in Nov 07 (I can't find the till receipt - I know the date I bought it though as I wrote in my a/c book). To cut a story short it has stopped working.
We took it back to the shop - who gave us a helpline number - we tried it and several others but no joy, no one wants to know.
Please would someone advise me where we go from here? I feel as it is under a year old we are entitled to a refund (sale of goods act?). But, Aldi have dug their heels in & are saying 'not our problem'. Prior to this we were very happy with the machine.
Thank you so much for your advice

The shop are the ones who you had the contract with, so the shop are the ones who should be resolving it, not asking you to deal with the manufacturers. Have you got any proof of purchase such as bank statement or credit card bill? That should suffice to prove you bought it from the outlet if you can't find the receipt, which is presumably why they didn't resolve the problem for you in the first instance. I would try and track down any POP you can, then go back to the store and ask them to refund or replace the item.

Aldi are pretty good and will usually refund or replace - as soon as you provide proof of purchase.

It isn't their fault you don't have a receipt, or bank statement if you used a debit card (they don't accept CC)

Try returning it to a different branch.

You need proof of purchase-how do they know its not 2 years old ore more.If you do have some proof of purchase (the account book may be enough) i think you may have to persue this through trading standards. They are not a company that likes to give anything away if they don't have to.

Is also worth looking on the item itself - there may be a label with the manufacturinng date or a date mark in one of the plastic parts showing when the plastic was moulded (often look like a closk face with an arrow pointing to the right month and a 2 digit year either side of the arrow)

If there is (and it shows it was manufactured within the last 12 months) they can't really argue that you bought it before it was manufactrured!

 I have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.

Aldi only sell products like this for brief periods of time, they'll know it's not old. However they may want to satisfy themselves that you purchased it. I'm surprised the helpline have not helped, Aldi stuff normally comes with long warranty periods.

As nomoneytoday says, try and get hold of a bank statement.

I think i would definitely ring consumer direct and ask them if they think the bank statement would be acceptable.
As allready said ,your contract is with them, not the manufacturer.

Its made me realise how unclear the law is re this. I looked up sale of goods Act and it seems that after 6 months its up to the buyer to prove the fault? Does that sound right? I always thought it protected the buyer for a year.
I've never had any problems with Aldi before, when a digital camera broke down they sent a new one from Germany (which I thought was great).
To update - rang the number on the box again, this time got another number who said someone from Germany would call back in the next 48 hours. I'll let you all know how it pans out. It hasn't put me off Aldi in any way (too many good offers)!! Thanks everyone who took the time to reply.

How much did you pay for it?
