Unfortunately The crooks have discovered that a cordless drill and drill bit will penetrate your tank in no time at all if they can not siphon off your oil. ( Happened to a workmate). This then requires that you replace your oil tank too. Also needs any spillage cleaned up which can be costly too. A lock will only keep honest people out.

Yes your correct, one can only make it as difficult as possible for these thieving pond life, or spec up material to 6mm plate, still drillable, but will take an age, plus lots of cutting paste...........hole can be welded up, need to fill it with inert gas first, stop it going bang.............

Yes I agree, mind you I used to weld pipe branches onto live gas mains!! Funny thing was we never had an audience when we did this. Even the onsite drillers waited in the canteen until we were finished.
Used to drill 2mm stainless counters on the ferries with 10mm cobalt drill bit, took around 2mins per hole and rocol cutting fluid. Everthing has to be bolted down to prevent machines etc. falling off in High seas.

    Happy days!

Okay if it is a reasonably modern Titan oil tank - there'll be two access points. The first is an inspection cap, which is about 4" diameter; the second is a fill point which is about 2" diameter. TM

There is also another possible access point - the vent cap can be easily forced off.

I have just suffered loss of about 150 litres and I expect that they willbe back for the rest so I've just bought a locking vent cap and locking filler cap at rpm-fuels.co.uk and will be fitting a close shackle padlock (so that bolt croppers can't be used) to the inspection cap.

It's amazing how hard it is to find these locking caps but I expect it will get easier if the price stays so high.
  • Hi there fellow money savers

This atkinson locking cap will satisfy your requirements as it can be fitted to both steel and plastic oil storage tanks: www. commercialfuelsolutions.co.uk/equipment/atkinson_locking_fill.html

You can also get alarms from here but noit sure if they are tinfoil proof?

I hope this helps, it worked for me and features a heavy shackle as recommended by Gloucestershire police: www. gloucestershire.police.uk/Crime%20Reduction/Oil%20Tank%20Security/item9470.html

OH is going to padlock ours tomorrow. He was not pleased to come home from his work to find the delivery note from the supplier today.

924 litres in since the 31st of December.

Can you fit a padlock to it? and may be some security lighting in the area. Is the tank easily accessable?

Food for thought for those who may want to look at a tailor made tank made from sturdy, non corrosive, maintenance free stainless steel?
Have you seen the price of stainless steel these days? It would be worth thieves stealing both oil and tank!

Maintenance free and, last a lifetime, plus a tea leaf would require a crane to lift oil in tank, I'm sure the noise would alert those around and, with such a huge vehicle, no danger of not capturing images via cctv :p

Ps, how much is it, I rarely pay for materials
  • I just got an oil tank lock for £66.00 which fits my titan oil tank, you can find them here: tankservices.co.uk/fuel-oil-tanks-for-sale.php?oiltank=224

You'll also need a normal padlock for the bigger cover next to the filler.

Hope this helps, no one can afford to have 2000 litre of oil stolen!
