Question: Car petrol

Next 5-6 months I will move to the new house. It will take about 40-50 mins by bus or about 30 mins by car from new house to my work place. I now dont have a car but I am thinking to get second hand one.

I am just wondering how much about does it cost per day for the petrol if I drive a car from my house to my work place and for the return too. Can you tell me the roughly cost i would have to spend on the petrol if I use a car (about an hour drive per day). I wanna see the minimum I will have to pay and decide if I should get a car or coninue taking a bus (obviously more convenient by car) . hm.... but I dont want to take a bus anymore!

Depends on your style of driving and the miles the car will do to the gallon.

    Impossible for us to guess!

It does vary a lot - but if you get a car a reasonably economic car and drive it reasonably smoothly, you should get at least 30mpg.

    At 115/litre that's something like 17p / mile.

You then have to factor in the cost of the car, tax, MOT, servicing, repairs, insurance, any roadside etc.

In a thread earlier today I worked out that the cost of tax, MOT, servicing, repairs and insurance works out to around £4/day. (edit: on my car, obv)

    Ok, let's say

    8 miles home-work (16 miles return journey)

80 km/h (50 miles/h) driving and as Idiophreak said "with a reasonably economic car and drive it reasonably smoothly"

    30mpg (just as Idiophreak suggested)

driving mostly in the city centre where there is a little bit of traffic jam.

    .......

I just wanna know the roughly cost on petrol (not including tax, servicing, repairs, insurance....etc which are seems to be a fixed cost)

I would stick with the bus if you can you will use approx 1/2 a gallon a day which will cost £2.55 per day in fuel at £1.15 a liter but the price of the go go juice is only going one way! Then you have all the other costs and trouble of car owning.

Have you thorght of 2 wheels? a bike would get you fit aswell or a moped would get you through the traffic using less than half amout of petrol.

This sounds simmilar to my wife. We have a diesel car and it costs about £60 per month excluding any other journeys. She can save fuel by adjusting the tiime she leaves home and leaves work. (Can you work flexitime and adjust your times to miss the worst traffic?) We have a large car so you could reduce this somewhat by getting a smaller engine. I dont think you could get much below £40 for an hour a day comute.
    Hope this helps
