    No they aren't, they can do, but they aren't supposed to. To say your postage charges covers effort and material is ridiculous.

    WRONG:

    eBay rules state:

    Sellers may charge reasonable postage & packaging charges to cover the costs of posting, packaging, and handling the items they are selling.

    packaging = material
    handling = effort (and storage, invoicing, etc)

    It really doesn't matter though what a seller charges for, whilst buyers can just mark down the stars a seller would be foolish to load more than a small amount on for bits and bobs.

    If the ebay forums are to be believed sellers are being suspended all over the place, since stars directly impact on the buyer satisfaction score it would be a foolish seller who tried to save a few pence at the cost of his ebay business.

    Even those with their own websites claim to need a few regular ebay auction as a means to draw attention to their other places.

    The new Best Match search method is now scuppering that idea as well. I was with a friend who has over 100,000 feedback who showed me their store traffic reports. Over the last few months it has been going from feast to famine on a weekly basis. His listing strategy has remained stable and there are no DSR visibility issues. It is simply a case of buyers finding his listings - and they aren't.

    In one week he can shift over 1000 DVD's, the following week he will be hard pressed to sell 50. Nobody can run a business like that, so he is now in the process of moving his DVD listings to his own website, and using the money saved on eBay fees to fund a Google Adwords campaign.

    OK, carry on charging inflated postage then. 'Effort' = your job, you obviously work on minimal profit goods if you have to add on that for your p&p charges.

    Personally I couldn't care less what anyone charges, if I'm buying something, inflated p&p charges will put me off, if any competitors want to charge double what I do for postage (some charge more than that on courier rates) I'm happy to welcome their customers, that and the fact that their DSRs are too low to get a discount, so they are paying more than me in fees.

    As Soolin says your customers via sales and DSR ratings will let you know what they think of you charging extra for perspiration!

    Goodness, we always said that it would be bad when the mega sellers left..

    I was trying ot buy something this afternoon and instead of a quick press and win I struggled to get through the new searches to compare prices. In fact I gave up at one point and tried again later and got a load of different auctions on the same keyword search.

    Also someone showed me the results they got when they searched for 'nude' under the category 'sculpture' (they want a particular figurine but don't know the name of it-honest!) and lo, Winnie tthe Pooh appears ..no nude no sculpture so how did that happen?
