All semantics really. A "BT Line" is just any non-cable standard phone line connected to BTs network. Doesn't mean you have to pay rental to BT, however the distinction is never made clear.
Sky do line rental and CPS and they, and others, should clarify that for their CPS service you need a "BT Line" with line rental payable to BT but for Sky line rental they can take over any "BT Line" (rental paid to any provider).

oh I am getting more and more confused CPS etc. Basically sky talk have told me as long as it is BT compatible I can get sky talk. I won't be jumping ship from the post office because I will still be paying them the line rental which you have to anyway regardless if BT directly or not. All I wanted to know if it was possible and I without getting complicated it looks like yes I can.

Not sure where your coming from here. With line rental from the Post Office you can't get Sky Talk as a CPS (part 21.2) provider. If you do want Sky Talk you have to transfer/pay line rental to Sky.(as Heinz mentioned above)

.... or, to have Sky Talk as your CPS (Carrier PreSelect calls provider), pay line rental directly to BT.

I have just spoke to the post office again and they say it is a bt line that they rent. I then spoke to sky talk and they said it won't be a problem getting sky talk as it is a BT compatible line. They said the only way they can't do it if it is an independent company like virgin or talk talk. So I think I have it all sorted now. It is very confusing and very time consuming but I have it sorted now. Thank you all for your help.

Only BT have to allow you to CPS your calls to another supplier. The Post Office will not allow you to CPS your calls to another supplier.

The only way you can get your calls via Sky Talk is to have a BT Line and CPS your calls,or to get Sky Talk line rental.

ok I think I will cancel my post office line and go with BT. I would be under a 12 month contract with them is it still possible to take out sky talk unlimited without breaking my BT contract? I don't want my line rental from sky talk I just want the £5 package. Or would I be best just taking the sky talk free one?

You can to CPS your calls to any bundle you like,BT are not concerned about what bundle you take with your call supplier.

Sky are able to offer Phone Line Connection as i suggested earlier.See:

We will inform you of our current connection fees at the time you book your installation. Sky Talk Line Rental customers do not need to pay any other provider for line rental"

That depends on your telephone use. Do you need international calls to the free destinations Sky offers in its Unlimited package or do you need to make more than 100 weekday daytime UK 01/02/03 calls per month (at 5p each, the cost of 100 such calls via 18185 would be £5)?

I found this information this morning on Sky Talk T& Cs. Not once when I phoned Sky did they mention this. All they kept saying was you need to phone BT. Looking at the article Heinz wrote I can see the benefits off having the BT line to save money on certain calls. I am going to phone Sky again and see if I can get them to do me the offer on paying the BT line. They said it is now finished but I might get lucky!!!!!

Just cancelled my post office phone line. Was a bit annoyed with all the different information Sky kept giving me so phoned to cancel them altogether. When I was put through to disconnections she offered me free set up of the broadband and sky talk and sky talk unlimited for a year for free. The lady is ringing me back next week to see if line connected so she can sort out my offers for me. Wasn't so lucky to get the BT line payed for but am still happy I got some sort of deal. You guys have been really helpful, cheers.
