What modem do you have? If possible get the line stats - http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.htm , up/down snr margin, attenuation, sync rate (connection rate) and post here.
Many drawbacks with usb modems so as suggested a router is preferable.
Problem with lost connection when phone used suggests faulty filters - http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/connectionprobs.htm

    >PS dont now if its anything but we have alwys had a crackle on the phoneline if the broadband is on despite using a filter (and if someone phones the house while you are online it breaks the connection) but the crackle is much worse now ????

You now need to have this fixed. All this noise only ends up in the re-sending of requests, hence slooooowwwww speeds, fix the obvious and everything else will improve.

To follow on what Deklan says, let us know what modem/router you have. If you have a speedtouch type and you have been upgraded to Adslmax (up to 8meg) then turning the modem off and on when you want to use it will fool the BT exchange into thinking theres a faulty line. The Snr will go way up and speed drop. Leave the modem on and let the line settle down and you should see an improvement.

Hi again - I have just had an email from Supanet Support

    Dear Customer

    Thank you for your email

Once your regrade has completed there is a 10 day "training" period whilst the
maximum line rate (speed) is determined. During this time period BT will
automatically record the higher and lower rates that your line supports, and will
then decide upon the Maximum Stable Rate (MSR).

During this training period it is expected that your Broadband service will
disconnect at times, and need to be reconnected - this is part of the training
    process.

We cannot process a fault with BT during this period, if the the reported fault
remains after this period please call:

    0906 700 1005

Calls to this number are charged at 50p per minute. Lines are open Monday to Friday,
9am to 8pm and Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 5pm.

    Regards
    Ejaz
    Supanet Team

So I suppose I shall have to sit tight & see!
    Thanks xx

Can't find a thing on your modem so to get a very rough idea of what speeds you can expect type in your post code here - http://www.samknows.com/broadband/mapping/mapping.php , click on your location the map and fill in your house number and complete the post code again and hit check (should tell you rough distance from exchange first). On the left should be approx. line speeds and other info.

Eek, going by that you're lucky to get anything at all! If that's correct I don't think the "upgrade" will have done you any favours. Did you happen to notice how far from the exchange you are? Appears when you click on the map.

    Hi - I'm 5376m away -

Before all these problems (upgrade??) i'd usually get 700 - 800 kbps

My neighbour is with talk talk and can only get 200 kbps
