What Family estate with good fuel economy?????
HI
I am after buying a new car. I have had the Renault Laguna Sports Tourer 1.9 Diesel for my last 2 cars. I personnally think they are great as they are a large estate , great fuel economy, nippy, sporty inside and looks good outside , cheap tax & insurance.
I was going to upgrade and buy another one but am just interested to see if anyone can give me any ideas on anotehr family estate which looks good, and good fuel economy and insurance?
Thanks

i have a 406 hdi estate
I always achieve over 60mpg (usually 62.1) on my daily 80 mile commute. This is all motorways though. Its the 90bhp so no as much poke as the larger capacity peugeot diesels but it does me fine.
I always achieve at least 1000 miles from a tank0 -
the 'looks good' part may split opinion but I would consider the following shortlist....depending on budget as well.
Ford Mondeo
Skoda Octavia
VW Golf Estate
Toyota Avensis
Subaru Legacy *My Choice*
Mazda 6 Estate
Alfa 159 SportwagonPraying at the church of MSE should be compulsory!

I've got an Octavia estate, cheap, economical and bags of room. It's a great car but in all honesty I can't say it looks good! But I'm limited on what I can have (company car) and practicality was the overiding concern.
The Accord estate looks good and they have a decent reputation. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends

The legacy is nice, but is it any good on fuel? Never looked into the figures for one0 -

Thanks for this but my main choice is fuel consumption and i am not too sure (dont quote me) if these are all economical?

All the ones I listed are relating to the diesel version. All are respectable but will depend what compromise looks and practicality make in to the figures,
eg Legacy 2.0R TD
Town mpg 39.8
Out of Town mpg 56.5
Average mpg 49.6
Compared to Ford Mondeo ECOnetic Estate
Town mpg 38.2
Out of Town mpg 60.1
Average mpg 49.6
Golf Estate Bluemotion
Town mpg 47.9
Out of Town mpg 72.4
Average mpg 61.4
Toyota Avensis 2.0 D4d T2
Town mpg 39.2
Out of Town mpg 60.1
Average mpg 49.6
Alfa Romeo 1.9 JTDm
Town mpg 34.0
Out of Town mpg 58.9
Average mpg 46.3
Skoda Octavia 2.0 PD Elegance
Town mpg 40.4
Out of Town mpg 60.1
Average mpg 51.4
VW Passat 1.9 TDi BlueMotion DPF
Town mpg 38.2
Out of Town mpg 57.6
Average mpg 54.3Praying at the church of MSE should be compulsory!

I have a new Laguna Sport Tourer and its a good car but not a patch on the New Mondeo, but you'll have to wait 6 months if you want a desiel. the Octavia was too small for me, but i believe the new Superb will be available as an estate. my suggestions would be
Ford Mondeo
VW Passat
Mazda 6
Toyota Avensis

The Octavia actually has a larger boot (with the seats up) than a Mondeo but it is a smaller car so legroom isn't so good. Not a problem for me as my children are still young and I'm not very tall. The estate version of the new Superb should be enormous, I'll be interested to see how much they are in a couple of years. It's my problem, it's my problem

Good on fuel and insurance - you have not said what purchase price or monthly budget and if your money saving depreciation is a much bigger concern than fuel costs. If it is because you are leasing, what leasing budget have you got?
Subaru Legacy Diesel - I have test driven this, simply awesome 4 cylinder diesel engine which I easily saw 50mpg on A road driving, very refinement and respectably quick. The car as a whole is great. The problem is Subaru are incompetent at putting a pricing policy together which ensures decent residual values. They are offering £3000 discount on new petrols, which effectively puts a £3K instant expense onto any Legacy purchase without it. The servicing costs are also astronomical relative to the competition. The costs of the £23K Legacy diesel are so high that over 3 years you will part with more cash than you would for a £33K list price BMW 520d Estate with an achievable discount (also has much lower lease costs than any Legacy).
So consider a nearly new BMW 520d Estate, as an auto 50mpg, as a manual 54mpg, slightly better figures for a 320d Estate but this is smaller than a Laguna. The purchase price might seem high for a nearly new at £27K to £29K for a September 2007 onwards efficient dynamics model with this low fuel consumption, but with cars its not what you pay, it's what you loose that matters most - so long as you can meet the payments for the higher purchase price in the first place. There is also a vast difference in drive and refinement between these two cars.
Alternatives a bit more on the lines of a Laguna for purchase price:
Mazda 6 - great drive, good residuals and now with decent diesels getting near 50mpg and good on insurance.
Skoda Octavia - decent drive, good residuals... etc. as above but not particularly stylish.
A young, say 1 year old Vauxhall Vectra is exceptionally good value where depreciation has worked in your favour and given you a nearly new car for half it's original purchase price.0
