If you have a 'dynamic IP address' (whereby the ip number changes all the time) i think you should be alright........especially if on both accounts you have different names & addresses.

    um, no.

An IP address is assigned to a modem or router.

Sometimes multiple PCs share an IP due to a proxy server in your ISP.

A dynamic IP just means that if you disconnect your modem/router you would get a different IP when you reconnect (as is the case with BT broadband), though even then sometimes you get the same one (you can check with www.whatismyip.com).

Beyond that there will be a cookie on your PC.

Personally I doubt that Ebay track either, and if you get suspended I imagine they match things based on your postcode/address and credit card number.

    Er..... yeah!

    According to http://info.aol.co.uk

'If you have a static IP address, your IP address does not change and is used as a consistent identifier for your computer by other computers on the Internet.

If you have a dynamic IP address, then when your computer connects to the Internet, you will get a randomly assigned IP address from a pool of IP addresses available from your ISP, and the IP address assigned to you may be different every time you connect.'

My sister in fact has a Dynamic IP address and her IP changes every time she connects to the internet.

Maybe the simple answers are the best - why doesn't your husband open an eBay account of his own.

If eBay suspend you the presumably his account is not suspended ??

I'm sure Ebay will track and keep IP addresses and users who have logged on against it. The may also keep mac addresses and other details from your connection.

It doesn't always work but go to: http://www.find-ip-address.org/ see if it knows where you are.

Yes ebay have confirmed they are monitoring ip addresses 'for our own security'. Someone posted it on here a month or so ago..I think it is being rolled out for the future months. Apparently if ebay detect you using a location that is not the one you usually log in from the they will call you on your registered telephone number to ask if it is you before they give you access, this is of course alledgedly to stop hijackers.

The obvious flaws were pointed out being that a) many of us joined ebay when a landline was required rather than amobile, so if I use a friends PC and they call me I am obviously not going to be at home. Secondly, even if we change our telephone number to a mobile are we really going to want to pay for the call when ebay call us on holiday in an internet cafe in the US?

Call me paranoid but this is another great way of suspending smaller sellers..no answer to a phone call and your account is frozen, wrong telephone number, oops your account is suspended. Businesses will of course be more likely to have staff or a fixed number that someone will answer.

In theory you're correct... but in practice, ebay tends to put 2 and 2 together and make 5.

It's not unknown for someone to be suspended because they moved into a house that previously had a suspended occupant.

If they can make a connection between accounts (name, address, email, etc. IP perhaps) and one is suspended, there's a strong possibility the other account will be too, and historically it has proven difficult to appeal against.

I have a free 084 number and I have Ebay and PayPal set up with that number.

It auto answers to a message, so would that protect me even if not picked up?

I can set it up to divert to any landline phone I like, I could also do mobiles but then I would have to pay for that.

At the moment it tries my BT land line then if that is not answered or engaged it goes to my VOIP and that takes a voice message for me to retrieve later.

I have a static IP, but if I also fire up a dialup account at the same time my IP will show as the dialup IP and not my static IP, and as I have quite a few Dialup accounts I could change IP quite often, but not sure I would want to use dialup for any longer than a few minutes.

Thanks all but I do not think I will bother. All I wanted was a safeguard if some numpty gave me a negative and got me suspended as I only sell a few items. Soolin not everyone is dodgy I was told that the same address could suspend an account. I have two addresses in one house. What about all the people who open accounts at their parents etc., they seem to get away with it.

Thanks for all the Ip advice but I was lost after IP ... I think. Thanks anyway.

If you were told that using the same address could suspend an account then you were misinformed. I also do not understand why people would need to open an account at their parents house? if they live there then that is fine but why do it if they have their own address elsewhere?

There is no way to get a MAC address from a TCP/IP connection. Until ebay starts using download software/ActiveX/Java for us to bid on ebay (i.e. never), they are not getting that data.
