Inform tax credits as you may get an increase in your award. Inform IS and HB as you also may get an increase in your award. DLA is not counted as income for IS or HB.

You do need to inform them but as cifpower says DLA is not counted as part of the equation. When you declare income take off any DLA income when it comes to tax credits. You may be even be entitled to more.

You should be entitled to extra components against HB and IS if you get them for the disability. Im almost sure you get an extra allowance with the tax credits as well. My son is 22 now so I'm not as up on the rates Im afraid. It is definately not classed as income though so youve nothing to lose and everything to gain!

Your CTC award should rocket skywards if you have 2 children severely disabled.

Its strange that you didn't think they were entitled to high rate care but they got it? I thought high rate care meant severely disabled, ie 24hr supervision and care, wheelchair bound etc? That to me would have been pretty obvious?

Are they mobile? You can claim mobility allowance?
Are they severely disabled? You can claim disabled and severely disabled CTC.

Are you their carer? You can claim carers allowance.

If you post up more info we can help you get your full entitlement, i believe there is another member on here with 2 severely disabled children and she receives well in excess of £25k+ worth of benefits per annum.

i have rung tax credits, he said it may make a difference but didnt say any more about that.

    in answer to the questions

when i spoke to a lady at dwp yesterday my boys got the high rate as they wake during the night and there creams etc need re-aplying

im not going to defend myself as i know dla is a very touchy subject for some, 2 of my boys suffer with severe eczema, they wear tubifast suits, have a strong seroid cream and various emoilent creams, there skin has landed them in hospital and recently we have been going weekly to the hospital as ds3 is so bad (he is now on an adult strength steroid for a max of 5 days to see if that helps a little) dairy free diets, no pets, heyfever

it was suggested that i apply for dla so i got the forms filled them in sent off as everyone else did, had 3 letters back 1st one saying they would be contacting the pead dermatologists other 2 were just to say they were waiting to make a desision (spelling!) when i had starnage money in my account from dwp i rung to find out they had been awarded higher care, neither of the 2 of them sleep a full night ive had nights where ive been lucky to get 2 hours sleep where creams and suits need sorting or where they have scrathed so bad there is dirty bedding

and yes i car full time for them i do it mainly myself with there dad throwing the odd weekend in here and there, last time he had them they came back so bad my youngest was nearly kept in hospital for infection

The bold is why it is higher rate DLA.

You are right, DLA is a 'touchy subject', just remember that this money is paid to them - it is their money based on the quality of life due to their disability. If the posts start to turn negative, as they so often do when any benefits are being discussed, ignore it. You know what your children have to suffer, you are right to say you are not going to defend yourself.

The higher rate DLA will result in an extra element in CTC, so don't worry that the money will go down.

    thank you oldmcdonald

i think its why they get dla that may be a touchy subject for some

my landlady recently has only started more understanding about there skin etc and is looking into getting some sort of wooden flooring in place of carpets in my rented house (at the moment i wash carpets weekly with very hot water to help with dust mites), ive now been able to order them special sleepsuits/nightwear to help prevent so much night time scratching, and may now be able to look into a non fabric sofa so i can try and eliminate as many dustmites as i can (they already have anti allergy bedding)

ds2 starts playschool in september but im seriously considering putting ds3 into something 2 mornings a week to catch up on sleep or the pile of ironing i never find the energy to sort (each night i say i will get up early to do and each morning i say i will sort that night lol)
