Beetroot

Options
Morning, all. I've been very organised this morning and have got a goulash simmering in my slow cooker and was just rootling through the fridge to see what veggies etc I could put with it. Have found four small organic beetroots and was wondering if I could grate them and steam them rather than put the oven on for over an hour to bake them? Had an idea that I could grate celeriac as well and steam them both (in separate parts of the steamer otherwise it'll look like there's been a horrible accident) and mix them together with some butter and parsley.

Has anyone ever steamed grated beetroot and did it work?

Thanks
FF

PS I HAVE looked through the recipe index and all the websites mentioned :D

:) I've only ever seen it grated to go in cakes. I'm not aware of any previous mentions of this anywhere in Old Style either.

Found this recipe for buttered grated beetroot, where you lightly cook it in a pan until still crisp, so if you can lightly cook in a pan, you should be able to steam it.

  • Ooh fantastic, thank you so much! :j I had almost decided to give it a go anyway, after all it's only four little beetroot but I hate wasting food so....

I'll let you know how it turns out.

You can both bake and steam beetroot. The only problem with steaming it is that it will lose a lot of its colour and look a bit anemic. Baking beetroot also takes quite some time.
