Ok originally i asked for a decent card that would work good with my 22" monitor at run average games
was looking to spend round 50 quid
so now u suggest a PSU at 60 and a graphic card at 120-140 (8800GTS)
oops
what is my best option on a medium range graphic? is a 7300GT worth at around a 10 (auction site)
I was responding to points people have brought up in the thread.
Your best option still is this
But bear in mind it's still a dated card, so it's not going to be able to handle the big games like Crysis, Farcry 2 etc.0 -

Am i not better with a same card with DDR3 instead (+$15) or is it not worth it?Wins so far:
£1,800, campari platter, limited edition peroni bottle opener, sharp blu ray player, £600 Karen Millen shopping spree, £550 limited edition blind, Capetown 7 day holiday, Tshirt, £100 Tesco Voucher, £100 Arcadia vouchers, 7 day Europe tour, £100 hotel voucher, limited edition capitan morgan bottle, 1 month bus pass travel.0 -
As my PCU is only 250 will this be ok?
Or shall i invest a bigger capital on both?Wins so far:

You may wish to spend the extra money now, than buy a lower end card and have to upgrade in 6 months time.
I personnally wil be buying this in a few weeks time.http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?NOV-88GT5#top0 -
is it true prices in these cards will be going down in the next few weeks as a new set is launched?
can do with waiting a few weeks and saving a few bucksWins so far:

The minimum PSU required for an 8600 GT is 300w.
Are you sure it's 250w, that seems really low for a new build.0 -

Yes, Nvidia is releasing the next series this month I think, so prices should come down, but they won't come down by so much for the lower end cards, maybe the top end ones.
The thing is that the equipment you have is not enough to power a high end card, and yet you want a card that will play all the latest games at your desktop resolution. With the power requirements of newer cards, your rig is just not going to cut it.
So if you are planning on keeping this rig for the next 2-3 years, then I would advise you upgrade your PSU and then you will be able to get a good video card such as the 8800gts or gt once that comes down in price and this will last you for the same period of time. Expect a fall of maybe £10-15 in the price of the high end cards, no more.0 -

Thing with prebuilts is that they tend to scrimp on stuff like the PSU, giving you a PSU that'll just power the hardware that comes fitted, and no more. Most people who buy prebuilts wouldn't upgrade them anyway, so it's fine mostly. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0 -
Post above beat me, as i was going to say, i read somewhere that prebuilts moterboards and powersupply's usually go together, meaning you cannot change your PSU, however i may be wrong.
As for the original poster, is this PC a slimline case as most normal sized HP computers come with its own card so intergrated graphics is what i see in the HP mini desktops. If so, i think some of the 8800GTX and 8800GT cards may be to long, however im not 100% sure on this.
I dont know how techy you are but my best advice would be to go down to PC World, tell them what you want and they should be able to work out what card will fit and if you will need a new PSU. Don't forget PC World WILL pricematch amazon.co.uk so make sure you do your homework before going as PC World are a rip off for graphics cards....or anything for that matter.
EDIT: I just had a look at the HP website at your machine ( or something similar ) and it states:
Supports resolutions up to 2045x1536 @ 32bpp0 -
Can't say I've seen a prebuilt with a custom power connector on the motherboard.
You're right about the length of some of the cards though, my 8800GT is pretty long, and bloomin' heavy too.
not sure I'd recommend PC World though, even with their price matching. Amazon ain't the cheapest, so it's not the most useful place to price match. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0
