Cheapest way to call mobiles

At the moment when I phone my mum (who has a Tesco mobile) from my mobile if my free minutes are used up it costs me a fortune to call her (example call last night for about 25 minutes practically used up all my £8.00 credit). I want to find a cheaper alternative calling her from my landline but don't know the best way to go about it. Is there one overriding provider that is better for mobiles than others? I find it quite confusing but need to understand it a little better so I can convince my hubby as I have tried to explain to him before but I don't think he's convinced.

Can anyone help me?

well i use primus one penny mobile, the call costs me 20p wether its for one second or 20mins 24/7, of course you would have to move to primus as your cps provider first.

    Hi Coolsteel

Does this mean we would have to change over from Talk Talk? Sorry to be really stupid.

Yes, Primus's Penny Mobile 2 is a CPS (Carrier PreSelect) calls provider - and you can only have a CPS is you rent your line directly from BT.

You may be able to save a little calling your Mum's mobile from your Talk Talk landline by using 18185's freephone access number 08081703703. You have to open an account with them first though.

Calls will then cost you 4p connection + 10p per minute during the week or 4p connection + 3p per minute at the weekend.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Hi Heinz, thanks for that. This is the thing that really confuses me with all the different suppliers and overriding providers you can sign up with.

That 25 minute call would have cost £2.64 at most via 08081703703.

Another option that would allow you to stay with TalkTalk is to use a Betamax VoIP provider. I think the cheapest for UK mobile calls is SMSListo (http://www.smslisto.com/). They charge 4.2p per minute for the call.

On top of that you have to pay for a call to one of the SMSListo access numbers. Because their access numbers are normal UK landline numbers you can use it from your mobile and pay standard landline rates. If you call from your landline, it may not cost anything if you have an inclusive package. Another way to avoid this cost would be to call using your computer with the SMSListo software.

You will need to open an account with SMSListo and buy some credit to use the service.

By the way, I have not used SMSListo myself, but I frequently use Nonoh (www.nonoh.net). Both of these services are operated by Betamax, so I would expect the quality and reliability to be comparable.

If you're prepared to switch to BT, I would tend to agree with previous posters that the Primus option is the best bet.

If you want to stay with TT you can cut the costs of calls to your mums mobile,by nominating it as your prime number in your calling circle.

and also subscribe to the Mobile Extra Bolt On just 45p a month.

Hi Ypaymore, I looked at Talk Talk's website and there are two options with them. The first one is paying 45p a month which would give 25% off the call which I think would still work out quite expensive and the other is paying an extra £7.99 a month to get 60 minutes exclusive mobile minutes which works out slightly cheaper than using my mobile but what if I want to speak to my mum for more than an hour a month

I think with the calling circle the calls might still work out quite expensive. I have tried looking to see what they charge for mobile calls to work it out but I can't seem to find it and I find their website quite difficult for finding the information I need.

I think I might try to convince hubby about the 18185 number as that looks like it could be the cheapest option.

Thats actually dearer then Talk Talk charge, a 25 minute evening (cheap) mobile call from Talk Talk Landline to Tesco Mobile would at the most cost 25 x 7p = £1.75 plus 6p connection= £1.81

Even cheaper if its nominated as prime number, and if you purchase the cheap mobile saver bolt on.

 How can 18185,s 10p a minute apart from weekends be the cheapest option when Talk Talk only charge 12p peak and 7p cheap (evenings) to call a mobile anyway, thats without the Free 20% prime number discount and the cheap 25% mobile saver discount.

Just with the 45p a month 25% mobile saver discount your only be paying 9p peak and 5.25p cheap (evenings).
