'Known fault' on Toyota

We had a problem last year with the electric windows on our Scenic. The passenger window fell off the runners band and wouldn't move, but it was fixed as part of the warranty. However a few months later the driver's side broke as well and the warranty had just expired. We took it to the dealers who said Renault were aware of the fault and we may get it fixed for free - however they charged us £300 as we were out of the warranty period. DP was annoyed at them back-tracking so he wrote and (politely) complained to their head office. We hoped to get some money back but Renault called us and said they would refund the full amount as they were offering repairs free as long as we were under 50k miles, which we were. We didn't expect a full refund but it was a very pleasant surprise. It's always worth complaining.0

Meanwhile, I still don't know what a baffle is..
Have a look at this page

The 3rd pic shows a cut away section and you can see the baffles inside the silencer box0 -

Not sure if this will work with Toyota but you could always try.
When the Alternator in my Fiat went I got it repaired at a cost of over £300. I did my research and found that it was a 'known fault' within the Fiat Punto's. I called Fiat's head office and made an official complaint.
I made it very clear from the outset that I wanted a refund as the problem was not my fault and was as I said a 'known fault'. This did take a lot of chasing up and faxing of documents to prove it had been done but eventually I got a full refund.
This also worked for someone else who PM'd me and had the same problem.
Hope this helps,
MM
As well as the Punto's famed head gasket problems. Admittedly my Punto was an old M Reg, but it blew up at 36000 miles and was uneconomical to repair0 -

Heat shields are normally made of mild steel, rust and can be welded. Maybe you're confusing a heatshield on the manifold with the plastic engine covers on most new cars that are there to look good and provide a little noise insulation? The man without a signature.0 -
The odd thing is, I read this thread before I left to take the kids to school. On the carpark I met a friend who drives an 04 Scenic, she was less than pleased to discover her passenger window had wound part way down and now wouldnt budge.
I mentioned itzmee's post and she was heading up to Renault to try and sort it out!0 -
sounds like a loose heatsheild
most can be spotwelded back in place at any small garage
i take it you have a rattleing from under the car?
I have a toyota yaris and i have rattling under the car where the exhaust was. I took it to a garage and they said they would look at it and "Fixed it" for £90 but then the next day it started again. I took it back and they said it was the air filter?
Now my engine light has came on and they want £60 just to tell me whats wrong and then probably more to fix it again!
Do you think i should complain? I bought the car second hand and it is at 95,000 miles but it is a w reg.

Air filter is not near the exhaust for one thing... find an independent garage, most have diagnostic equipment and don't have ridiculous targets to reach every month like main stealers do... and feel the need to rip you off...
Think some of the questions on here could go on the motoring thread for the best replies.
OP - known fault doesn't mean they'll fix it for free, it's not like a recall. But I think that you need to get a good independent to sort this for you, no need to pay high labour rates.Genie

Thanks for all the replies.
jeannnieblue We're in Herts so not far from you guessing from your 'location'?
So baffle is a new word for your notebook!
We've had the car about 4 years and it's been fine until now.
We took it to the exhaust place as we thought it was that rattling.
They said nothing wrong with exhaust.
Took it to the local independent small garage we use and he said it is the baffle in the manifold. Would cost about £400. He said Toyota Corolla have this fault.
Then took it to the Toyota garage who confirmed it was the baffle in the manifold. Said about £400. Mechanic said they have had quite a few cars in with this problem.
Looked at the used car guide and it says this is a 'known fault' with the Corolla.
So all points to the same problem.
Toyota garage said it won't affect the car or do damage if we can put up with the rattle.
Have to think about what to do next.0 -
I work for an independent Toyota/Lexus specialists - can't advertise but in a county just lower down than yours.
I would love to know what this part is...
£400 sounds excessive to me, but until I know what it is.... can't help!Genie
