How long to wait for a cash deposit to show up?

Options
Hi

I deposited some cheques and cash today, and usually when I pay in cash it shows on my account straightaway. However there is still no sign tonight and I have a direct debit coming out tomorrow

2-3 working days if you paid in cash+cheque together. Next time ask the cashier to separate the transaction so your cash will be credited immediately.

If you paid in cheques and cash on the same pay in slip maybe you'll have to wait for the cheques to clear before any goes in.
This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !
  • ah right, I didnt know that. I paid in a cheque on Friday and will keep my fingers crossed that might clear. Wonder if its worth a begging letter to NatWest if they charge me the £30 odd for a refused direct debit!

If you don't have one yet, try asking for an overdraft (or for an increased one). It'd be cheaper than the fee, pennies if that, and I believe most banks - though I'm currently with HSBC - approve you over the 24hr phone/internet and it appears immediately.

I had this today, if you pay in the cash with the cheque the cash doesn't become available until the cheques are cleared too :(

Natwest ODs (at least with telephone apps) can take up to 48 working hours to appear on the account :(

It's worth a try, I had a similar situation a few years back when I deposited a cheque + cash as I had a DD coming out. The teller filled out deposit slip and put them through together. When I realised what had happened ie I went over drawn due to returned DD and charges I phoned RBS explained I had paid 1/2 cheque and 1/2 cash as knew I had DD due they gave me back £100 of charges :)

Gah. Sorry for the misinformation then!

It might still be worth talking to them to explain what's about to happen (well it's a bit late now I guess but if they're 24hr!). Maybe they would do something to prevent the fee. Or, indeed, just try to get it reversed when it occurs.

No no not misinformation!! I do get people saying 'well HSBC increased it immediately last time' and I am like 'sorry aaaaaah!', I think Halifax might be immediate too as well.
