ive just had a letter from my elec supplier, saying that my direct debit needs to increase from £30/m to £47, otherwise i will be in arrears

now i thought £30 was bad enough, but £47!

so i just wondered how much other people pay

as a rough idea on my useage. all my heating, hot water & cooking is done using GAS, not electricity

so the only electric i use, is to run lights, tvs, computer, a fridge and a freezer. i do have a tumble drier, but i only use that for about 2 loads a week, and i have a really energy efficient one.

also we are only at home during the evening and at w/ends, so nothing is being used during the day (other than fridge/freezer)

so my next Q is, am i paying way too much, could by meter be dodgy, or is this the going rate??

2 bed terrace with 2 people in.

    Full time workers.

Gas runs the central heating, boiler and cooker.

Electric lights, comps, tv;s, hifi etc.

We pay £42 combined elec and gas with Powergen online tariff.

This has only just gone upto that price from £32 last year.

2 adults, workers, 2 children, gas heating/water and hob, everything else is electric. 4 bed house. £53 a month, plus we are in credit.
  • Could it be that several of your previous bills have been estimated and when an actual meter reading was provided your usage was found to be well above the estimates. This happened to me once and my direct debits went up hugely - I hadn't thought to check the correct meter reading against the estimated reading.

  • i'd just had my combined gas and elec, monthly payments, increase £31 pm!!

they said that my account was in arrears and i'd never pay them off at the lower rate :(

What you pay by Direct Debit often bears little relevance to your consumption; particularly when they increase the DD amount.

e.g. If you use, say, £480 of electricity or gas in a year but are paying £30 a month, you will be in debt by £120 at the end of the year. Many firms recover that debt over the next year and so will increase payments to £50 a month to recover £600 in the following year.

The point being that neither the £30 or £50 direct debit are a meaningful indication of your annual bill.

You really need to look at your bills and quote your annual consumption in kWh(units) – I use approx 6,800 units electricity(approx cost £450pa) for a gas CH house.
  • My own place, a three bedroomed detached cottage runs on electricity and gas. My monthly costs so far this year are working out at:-

    Electricity - £24.30 per month
    Gas - -£38.93 per month

  • 2 bed flat, 1 kid, we were paying £42 a month for both gas and electricity (Powergen) but just got a letter saying that they've increased our DD to £144 a month because we haven't been paying enough in the past 2 years.

I gave them my meter readings hoping to prove them wrong but after updating my account they actually raised my DD to £166 a month!

Which was the point being made in Post 7 above.

none of the DDs reflect your consumption.
