Unable to get broadband

I have just tried to upgrade my btyahoo surftime to brodband. In the middle of the registration, was told my line is too short and it is possible to get an engineer to see whether something could be done and I will be refunded if I cannot get broadband. The price is sligher as well £18.99 instead of the normal £17.99, I think, it says I can only get 1mb. I do not think that has to do with the fact that my computer is windows 98. Please help. Thanks

I think you may have mis-read it when you say it said your line was too short.

The further you are away from the telephone exchange, the lower the speed you can access. Remember its the length of CABLE between your house and the exchange, not the line of sight. My exchange is about 1.5km from my house but my phone line is over 3km! This means they can only give me a 1Meg service instead of 2Meg.

It is nothing to do with your PC at all. The reason it says about an engineer checking is that they are guessing about your line from knowing your postcode/address. If you go ahead and order it, they will come to your house and do a line test to check the line is OK for the 1 Meg service. You may be lucky and find it will run at the higher speed, they will check that at the time.

As they say, if you can't get broadband , oh well, but at least they wont charge you to find out.
