Hi all,

Using Windows update I downloaded XP SP3 for my PC. No problems with the download.

But.............when it was going through the restart I get a 'blue screen of death'.

I hard powered down & tried safe mode, still blue screen.

The tech info is,

STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC00001D, 0xF78D68EA, 0xF78D67F4, 0xF78D64F0)

Tried this 3 times - still same error.

Any advice..............PLEASE?

    Could this be the problem

Do you have an OEM system?

I guess if you can't get into safe mode it is not that.

You could try pressing F8 and select last known good, or what ever it is called.

But that last person who had trouble could not even get that to work.

Thanks for the quick reply Brit.

It's a Dell 9200, intel dual core, OS = Win MCE.

If I'm getting a blue screen during a boot into safe mode how can I follow the work around?

hi, do you have the original restore cds that came with the machine, you may need to do a full system restore, however if you have files that need to be recoverd first then i suggest removing the harddrive and putting it into another machine as a slave so that you can copy all the files you need before a system restore.

Quick update, I booted from my cd originals & repaired the OS as best I could. I lost all my restore points before the repair. All the user profiles & settings were also corrupted/lost. Up to date my non OS files appear intact.

I'm not touching SP3 with a bargepole until I get 110% guarantee it won't wreck my OS again.

Well make sure you report any bugs to microsoft so their engineers can sort them out. ;)

Does anyone know why and AMD machine won't accept the update?
I've tried a few times and get errors basically saying I don't have access to certain registry keys.

Are you installing this as a administrator of the PC? as you need to be that to have access too all the files on the pc.

I'm set up as an admin user rather than a standard user.
I've downloaded the file(s) (it gives me a zero time download when going to the MS updates website).

Because there was a problem with some AMD chipsets on some OEM units.
