Lowest cost way to use my mobile in Turkey?

Heading to Turkey next week and just checked out the roaming charges with vodafone. An eye watering £1.49/min to make a call and £1.25/min to receive a call!!

So planning to buy a local/global sim card. Lowest cost I've found is 27p/min to make a call and free to receive with per minute billing, this is with www.oneroam.co.uk

Just wondering if I've missed any alternatives and if anyone has used oneroam?

Thanks

If I understand it right (and I have mostly been following this on XDA- Developers), there is an "import" tariff to register your IMEI (ie your handset's details) with the network providers in Turkey if you wish to use a foreign handset on their networks for more than a week (or month).

The best discription I have found appears to be from CEBEP's post from last year on this page (partially quoted below).

I cannot say if this is still the case or if the system has improved/changed since then and I don't know if it counts when using a non-local SIM (oneroam or whatever), but I thought you might find it useful (forewarned=forearmed and all that).

Turk Telecom monitors all IMEI numbers of phones used in Turkey and if it is imported in your pocket (Grey Import) and tax is not paid it will be plocked by every GSM operator in Turkey and become unusable.

It means if you are foreignor and brought your GSM phone with you to Turkey you can use it for a week or month and then it will be blocked. I mean it will not work in Turkey only.

Now the best part: how to register your IMEI number

while entering Turkey, you must show up at the customs counter for GSM phones registration, show your passport with entrance stamp, show the phone itself and invoice which will include the IMEI number. if the phone is below EUR 300 they will stamp your invoice and all is OK. if above you will be charged with tax.

Cavey, unless things have changed in the last few years, this doesn't apply to roaming with a foreign simcard.

It applies to foreigners buying a Turkish simcard and then using it in their foreign phone.
