Kitchen fitting quote

An 'is this reasonable?' post, as this is the only fitter we've had to quote so far as this team of two were recommended by several people we know. Have yet to find any other recommended ones locally as people either weren't happy or paid huge amounts - neither of which sounded particularly tempting as a result for getting quotes. So we're umming and ahhing whether to call blind from the yellow pages or just go with this quote. Oh and we're in the south east if that's relevant for pricing.

The quote is for 1,850 and includes:

- removing remainder of kitchen (all that remains currently is sink and gas hob perched on worktop as we need to get gas disconnected, capped or whatever first)
- rearrange plumbing for sink and appliances (I need to check exactly what this means - but I assume that means they do all of it rather than they arrange for a 3rd party to do it at my expense)
- built units from flat pack and fit them
- there are 3 wall hung units (incl 2 x double doored ones)
- 4 tall units (larders x 2, oven housing and integrated fridge/freezer housing)
- 10 base units plus space for washing machine - I assume that still counts as a unit, so that makes 11 units
- fit an 'apron style' double ceramic sink
- wooden worktop - needs 2 joins and one gas hob cutout
- fit appliances (hob, extractor hood, oven, integrated dishwasher and fridge/freezer

Not including rubbish removal, electrics for lighting and placement of sockets etc, tiling above worktop (splash back), flooring.

Any thoughts?

Seems reasonable enough to me, especially as they have to build the units first. If they have been recommended by a few people, I would snap them up, as there are some real cowboy kitchen fitters around, who will be more expensive.

Thats probably not a bad price for your area, but I would just check about the plumbing and gas side of things. If several people are happy with them, thats a really good start and I'd probably book them up.

  • Doesn't seem too bad.As above, would check that the gas is being done by corgi fitter and is included in the price.

Thanks all. Today we managed to find another chap recommended by a friend of mother in law. He's a lot cheaper but although he isn't currently a kitchen fitter as such as he works as a decorator but he trained as a chippie and has fitted kitchens in the past, but possibly a few years back. He seemed quite knowledgeable and experienced re wood when he came around to quote on new door and bannisters and can do the kitchen for 1k, (plus we'd get a plumber to do their bit and an electrician to do their bit) so we'd save a fair amount in theory.

    Hmm decisions decisions...

Id be reluctant to use a guy who trained as a chippie but is now decorating. It may well say something about his quality of work.

I'd be wary too.Seeming knowledgeable and knwing what you are doing is a different matter.I fit kitchens and have thousands of poundsworth of tools for the job.

Yes, I suspect you are right re not going with the cheaper guy. Our house just seems a money pit at the moment (the previous owners were lucky they were not poisoned with lead, electrocuted or suffocated with gas!) and the money saved could go towards the boiler/plastering/wiring/bathroom etc fund. Oh well.
