  • It's nor hearsay, it's the opinion of people who work for a Renault garage.
For what it's worth, I have some "hearsay" too - I know someone who used to work for a Renault garage and he had to do a lot of warranty jobs on gearboxes.

Do mechanics in volvo car dealers just sit around all day with nothing to do as their cars are so reliable?

if you go into any dealer whatever the brand is they will all tell you horror stories
  • and infact renault gear boxes are used by many different manufacturers

like bmw and psa (citreon and peugeot) sharing development of engines
Only on 1.4 to 1.6 petrol engines which go into a Mini.
The relationship is also described as Peugeot using BMW sourced engines.
BMW 4 cylinder petrol engines are made in the UK.

or from another source... psa making the parts, shipping them to the uk for bmw to put it all together

    joint r&d costs

ZF and Gertrag (possibly others) are the big gearbox suppliers who have been supplying everyone from Renault to BMW to Jaguar for a long time. I'm not sure that any car maker actually makes their own gearbox though they may collaborate with a supplier for new developments and specific cars.
Bosch and Siemens are big in engine control units and other control systems like Dynamics Stability Control supplying to most European manufacturers and others.

yes, i wasnt clear, i meant that the gearbox that is found on renaults for example is acutally found on lots of other random cars

so saying renualt gearboxes are rubbish doesnt really mean much
