Folding sliding patio doors

Options
Hi all,

I know there have been a couple of threads about folding sliding patio doors about six months ago, but no-one seemed to have any first had experience of them? We're about to start building a rear extension and plan to put in a set of 6 foot oak effect folding sliding doors (tri-fold type). So really I just wanted to ask if anyone has had them fitted, how they were, who they bought them from, cost etc?

At the moment, the cheapest I can see are from Wickes at £1299 - http://www.wickes.co.uk/French-Doors-Hardwood/Folding-Patio-Doors/invt/187478I It does have 3 (very positive) customer reviews, but would trust them more if they came from here! :D

Thanks for any help you can give!

We will be buying some this summer. We went to the homebuilding and renovating show in April and of all of the companies there I saw some made by Jeld-wen who all the big builders merchants deal with and we were impressed - we're looking for timber doors. They don't sell direct so referred us to this company but suggested that you can certainly get the doors below list price - through this website http://www.doorsandmore.biz/product-details.asp?ProductID=376 but also by simply asking in places like Jewson.

I liked these doors particularly because you can open one door like normal if you're putting washing out or whatever, or open right out in the summer.

Friends already have some - they are MASSIVE, literally run the entire width or the house. I think you get what you pay for. The more space you have to fill with these doors, the more important quality is I think so it's important to try out some doors in the right sort of size for you. I think they used these people http://www.foldingslidingdoors.com/ Theirs aren't wood, I don't know what they're made of, not uPVC either, but they were able to choose the colour.
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
  • £1299 seems very cheap to me.Would question the quality of the doors at that price. The ones i have seen(some ali ones were fitted on a job i was involved in recently) usually run into the thousands.

We thought about them - also saw several examples at the aforementioned exhibition.

They look superb, when open, but not so clever closed - actually would make some rooms darker, we thought, plus...put off by £$£$, sooooo many fiddly bits to go wrong/wear out & give hassle in the future.

We chose a BIG 4panel slider, from Anglian, which is also still not free from problems, but see what you think, pics in www.theupsidedownhouse.9f.com.

We've started on the reased decking, which is going accross the back of the house, entirly & wraps around to the second (bedroom) patio doors, extending out, above the garden nearly 4mts.

It'll be nice when it's finished....everyone keeps telling us!!

I'm not sure what this company is like as I found them through a search engine when I was looking for a supplier of this type of door, however somebody on here might be able to give you an honest opinion.

    hi
we bought the Wickes ones for our new house which we have just built. I did lots of research and when i looked in detail I think these are the same as some other brand (instructions identical, word for word) which cost double the price.

Were very heavy, but carpenter fitted them on his own. Had a bit of easing and adjusting to start (mainly because new house drying out etc) but now fine. I am realy pleased with them. You can open one door like a normal back door, when you pull them all back its like a frame round the garden.

I would have them again. Used danish oil to protect ours.

    Hope this helps
