I've never been upgraded but then I have never bought anything other than an economy ticket.

My DH seems to get upgraded fairly frequently. With BA I think they give upgrades to gold/silver members (so frequent fliers) first. He has been upgraded from business to first (rarely) and from premium economy to business numberous times.

I also think he would be quite happy to pay to travel business class on holiday and leave his family in coach, but that is another matter entirely!

one final thought- not about upgrading per se, but legroom on long flights- do airlines reformat the seating on longhaul flights in cattle class?

a few extra inches(!) would help everyone arrive safer, and less likely to sue for unhealthy seating?

i fly quite often sometimes for business and sometimes for pleasure (lot of family abroad) and have been upgraded several times on BA. all i do is be polite, ask if the flight is full, and generally make myself stand out from others by having a conversation with the check in person (once asking what was the strangest thing they've encountered whilst checking someone in). it sometimes works, and sometimes doesn't

if it doesn't, you've at least cheered up a check in attendent who does not have the best of jobs!

i do wear a smart jacket over some jeans and a shirt, not sure if it helps though

just as an example, once i checked in late to a BA flight from Denver to London with two of my colleagues in World Traveller. the plane was fully booked and only had seats in the middle which i hate. so i said that we were on our way home from the international claustrophobics society meeting and needed either bulkhead or aisle (tongue in cheek of course) - she laughed loads, said in the mid-west accent that that was the best laugh she had all day, and she managed to free up 2 aisle seats and a bulk head seat for the three of us (my boss got stuck in the middle because he wasn't exactly polite about it!)
  • We once had an upgrade to bussiness class between Brisbane and Christchurch . . . wonderful
    Vampires Rock
  • At the end of an unforgettable holiday in San Diego (with added whirlwind romance) and shortly after a tearful goodbye at the airport, I went to check in for my flight to Boston for onwards travel out of the US. At the desk the man saw my bleary eyes and kindly whispered that as my ticket was not allocated a seat yet and the flight was almost full, there was a chance of an upgrade. He told me to hang at the back of the queue boarding the plane.

Still tearful, waiting at the gate, they called everyone forward to board, and I faithfully hung back. I finally got to the desk with the stragglers and handed my ticket to the lady. I mentioned what the man had said and she smiled sweetly and handed back the newly printed boarding pass and wished me a good flight. Looking at the ticket there was a big bold 'L' next to my seat number 29. Could it mean... Luxury?!

I got to the door of the plane and handed my pass to the gentleman. Again, upon seeing the sadness in my bloodshot eyes he commented "good seat!" and also wished me a pleasant flight. Then he told me to go through the second door, next to the door which all the other passengers had been entering.

    'This is it!' I thought.

Upon entering the cabin I was a little confused. The seats seemed as cramped and confined as economy, but my confusion was answered as I slowly crept down the gangway searching for my seat number. I saw a curtained entrance in the distance. In my heart I could feel that my luxury seat lie in wait behind it.

I shuffled closer and closer, only held back by the hoards of families struggling to get their luggage in the tiny storage space that economy offered. I felt a little pity for them as I prepared myself for the most blissful flight I was destined to have.

My seat was in reach now. I was only one row from the mysterious curtain. My eyes furiously scanned the seat numbers.... could it be... could it be that 29 was one number too far to be contained in the misery of economy? Could it be that I was about to join a small and blessed few behind this curtain, all sat in our Luxury seats? Could it be....?

    There she was.

    29L.

Next to 29K. Also next to the toilet. Also next to a family of six. Above a wing, and under a faulty light.

It turned out to be the most depressing flight I've ever been on.
  • ive been upgraded 3 times all with emirates. first 2 times i managed to end up on the same flight as my mums friends husband who always flys business class and insisted i was upgraded. well first time i was only upgraded on the glasgow dubai part as i had booked a stopover. 2nd time i was upgraded to business glasgow dubai and then dubai sydney, and on the way back i had managed to clock up enough flyer miles with the previous flights that i exchanged my air miles to be upgraded for the whole return journey :D

just wish i could afford to pay for business class rather than economy.

i fly with emirates twice a year minimum taking advantage of friends that live abroad :)
Debt free 3 years early :j
Savings for house deposit - very healthy

Cash back earnt so far £14.57

ALMOST..... on a flight on air canada to calgary .THANK U GOD ... only trouble was it was for a flight leaving 2 hrs later than the one we were booked on which was ok, but the only snag was we were on a package ski holiday and would have had to make our own way to resort if we took the upgrade [ in hindsight we should have done that !!]

at the time l also had my leg in plaster due to breaking my ankle in 2 places 3 wks earlier ski-ing in verbier, switzerland .so that upgrade would have had sooo much leg room for me ....gutted or what

even thou l could,nt walk let alone ski , i still went + had a brill time ,
the guy wheeling me through calgary airport said he could,nt wait to tell his wife[ who loved eastenders ] that he,d met a real life cockney:rotfl: :rotfl:
how many people can say they walked on frozen lake louise on crutches to look at the ice carvings , [ yeah l know... barking or what :D ] , had a sleigh ride all round it ,got on a snowmobile to take me up the mountain to a resturant for dinner and back down again in the dark [only way to get there ]

mind u getting around in a wheelchair in the snow in banff was a nightmare

the jacuzzi + pool in the lodge made up for that l had a special cover to keep my plaster dry so l could swim every day

    you only live once :D
