Yet what I wanted from this poll (as I intend to update the upgrades article) is that there is a realistic and possible chance of an upgrade. Yet I certainly do not intend to suggest there's a probable chance. It does mean for those intent on it - it is somethign that does happen.
Of ocurse we're doing lots of other work on it too - but this poll is really helpful
The problem is though that the upgrades article is a guide on How To Get A Flight Upgrade and I just don't see how the poll results can really shed any light on that subject?
What is really needed is a poll or a thread that explains why folk got an upgrade or why they think they did. It won't answer the frequency question, but it will better provide information with regard to why the upgrade was received, and thus ultimately provide a a guide on How To Get A Flight Upgrade.
To be honest, IMHO, the best option is a thread with a few questions and I would stick to econo to business upgrades as business to first upgrades are a whole different ball game.
Something like the following.....
1. How many non budget airline economy flights have you taken in the last five years?
2. How many times were you upgraded?
If upgraded, reasons for upgrades.
1. Don't know.
2. I asked.
3. Operational, airline bumped you off flight, etc.
4. Connections, i.e. family work with airline.
5. Frequent Flyer StatusThe MSE Dictionary

I have been upgraded twice (and flown quite a lot), so wanted to vote 'upgraded more than once', but though it is listed on the forum post, it is not on the vote page - So I can't vote! None of them apply.

I fly enough, but never been upgraded :sad:0

Being upgraded is as dangerous as taking crack cocaine!! Once you've turned left at the door you'll never want to turn right ever again.0

I heard somewhere that 'dressing for the part' is more likely to get you an upgrade if there is one available...0

I've been upgraded once.
It was our honeymoon, and we were only upgraded because a friend of my husbands works at Heathrow as a BA engineer and was on duty that night. He asked the departure lounge people to upgrade us, so we went from economy to premium economy, though only on the outbound trip.
It was very nice to have the extra leg room and better entertainment options
It does show that you only ever get upgraded by one class though. If there are four classes on the plane and you booked economy, there is little chance of getting to first class!0 -
I travel maybe once a month for business, and have only been upgraded twice, once from business to first flying to Jo'burg - what luxury! I've still got the free pyjamas! The other time was on LOT (Polish), and the cabin crew refused to believe I had legitimately been upgraded (the humiliation) but other passengers refused to let me out to return to the back of the plane.
No idea why it happened either time.
When flying for leisure with my OH we always ask for exit or bulkhead seats - he's 6'3" and 22 stone with a dodgy knee, so has trouble in normal seats, so I fully support the campaing for more legroom. We rarely get the extra legroom, despite phoning on booking, turning up early, having loyalty cards and asking at the gate - perhaps I'll ask for an upgrade instead!0 -
