Chinese 5 spice...

Hi
I bought a pot of this some weeks back, but have no idea what to do with it.
I wanted to make some kind of chinese dish, stir fry sauce or something? But I haven't got a clue what i'm doing to be honest. Does anyone have a recipe they could share.
I am making a sunday lunch today so wanted to use the left over chicken tomorrow. I get my tesco delivery in the morning so any ingredients I need can be added later today

Thanks Mel x

Not chicken but thought I'd post anyway...

there's a lovely thai dish called moo pa low 'pork belly with five spices'
heat 2 tablespoon of veg oil fry 2 large finely chopped cloves of garlic until golden stirring constantly, add 2 tablespoon chopped coriander root, 2 tablespoon five spice, fry for 30 secs and add 1 1/2 pounds pork belly sliced into 1 inch cubes, stir fry until cooked through and coated in spices. Add 2 pints chicken stock (only use 1 cube), 2 tablespoon soy sauce, 2 tablespoon fish sauce, 2 tablespoon sugar. Simmer for 30 mins skimming off any fat if you need to. Serve with rice & fresh corriander.

In thailand they also add 6 peeled hard boiled eggs with the stock although i didn't bother with that bit. The longer and slower you can cook it the better really.

I just sprinkle a small amount over white fish while its cooking, think thats all I've ever used it on, but it does give it a wonderful flavour.

I coat chicken legs or thighs in 5 Spice, heat baking tray (about 200 degrees) bung in chicken, sprinkle with Olive oil, cover with foil and bake for 45 mins to an hour, turning once. Delicious. I used to buy Thai 7 spices for this but DH bought 5 spice from a Chinese supermarket for a ridiculously low price. (Do similar coating with garlic salt with some blue cheese stuffed under the skin).

Maybe not suitable for your left over chicken but well worth trying sometime.

PS edited to say that it is always yellow-stickered chicken thighs and legs we use! Makes it a very cheap meal with pots & veg or salad.

Thanks for you replies...I never thought of sprinkling over meat/fish before cooking!!
I now have my chicken cooking away in the oven with a lovely sprinkling of spice all over it...it smells lovely.

  • Its nice lobbed in a tomato sauce for fish with a bit of white wine ( apple juice or apple squash if you dont have a bottle open) So, garlic, passata ( or chopped up tin of toms), white wine, bit of five spice powder, tiny bit of sugar. Cook for a bit to reduce, lob in some cooked potatoes and some white fish, cook til cooked through. Nomnomnom.

When making HM coleslaw, add a teaspoon to the mixture.

    hiya,

just a word of caution, its potent stuff, and the taste of the star anise is quite dominant, so use less than you think and taste before adding more.

    Hi there.

I use this recipe with left over chicken, it works really well, and cooks in minutes. Also, even my kids love it!
Serves four with plenty of rice or noodles.

    Left over chicken chopped.
1oz root ginger, very finely chopped. (Could use ground but unsure of quantities)
Half a teaspoon of five spice powder. (Add more as preferred).
Good dash of dark soya sauce.
    1 tablespoon chinese oyster sauce.
    1floz veg oil.
    1 red pepper, thinly sliced.
    2 garlic cloves, crushed.
    Salt and black pepper.

Mix together five spice, soya sauce and oyster sauce and season.
Heat the oil in wok or large pan, and add the pepper and stir fry until just soft, then add the garlic and ginger. Cook 2 mins.
Add chicken to pan and stir fry to heat through, then add soya/oyster sauce mixture.
Allow to heat through once more just to ensure chicken is piping hot, then serve!

I use it quite a lot on pork but I guess chicken will work v well too. I mix it with honey (prob 1 tsp of five spice to 2 - 3 tablespoons of honey) and pour it over the meat before grilling. And whatever leftovers you get from that meal can be added to some rice in the wok for another meal!
