    I used it once in apple turnovers as I picked it up instead of mixed spice. Bizzarely it tasted okay :rotfl:

    Here's another old favourite. The recipe is for pork, but chicken will be just as nice.

    Beat 2 or 3 eggs with a pinch of Chinese 5-spice and a pinch of cayenne (add some parsley or chives if you have them). Fry to make a firm litte omelette, cool and cut into small strips.
    Cook a quantity of rice (as much as you are used to eat - we have 75 g pp). Cut your chicken or pork into strips. In a large frying pan or wok, heat a little vegetable or soy oil. Fry some sliced mushrooms, then add the meat strips and cook till just done. Next add one or two green peppers cut into strips, a chopped onion or shallots, and a teaspoonful (to taste) of Chinese 5-spice. Stir well, cover and simmer for 3 to 5 minutes. Add the cooked rice to the pan and heat through, a spoonful of soy sauce, and finally the omelette strips.

    A few years ago when they were giving pensioners cans of stewing steak and packs of butter for a quick meal for my parents used to heat up the stewing steak and it was transormed by the addition of 5 spice powder, so that with rice and peas was a cheap meal for them.

    Hi, have been trying to buy some 5 spice powder, but can't find it anywhere!
    Tried Morrisons, Co-op, Lidl - no luck, can anyone tell me where to buy it?

    Any asian, chinese or oriental supermarket should do.
    failing that, you could make some up yourself.
    mixtures vary, but here are some examples:

    Star Aniseed, Fennel Seed, Cinnamon, Clove Bud, Cardamom

    Cinnamon, Anise, Fennel, Lilac, Dried Ginger

    Aniseed, Cinnamon Bark, Orange Peel, Ginger, Fennelseed.

    I do a Five Spice Rice... chop onion and green pepper (or red or yellow) and fry to soften in a little veg oil... then add five spice powder and heat until you can really smell the spices, (don't hang over the pan and breathe in at this point as the ginger will get you) then add diced leftover meat (chicken or gammon work really well, or cold roast pork) then add a cup of rice and stir till coated in the oil/spice... then add two cups of chicken stock and bring to boil. When boiling, turn off heat and leave pan covered until it's absorbed all the stock and the rice is cooked.
    You can then stir in a beaten egg for egg fried rice, or just serve as is with soy sauce to taste.

    It's what I call an empty cupboard dinner, filling and satisfying.. oh and if I've got any peas or sweetcorn in the fridge I bung them in too..... and I like mine spicy so i use a bit of tabasco as well as soy sauce.
