scared i am losing my 19yr old cat

hi, just got back from an out of hours visit to the vet. my 19yr old siamese cat had a nosebleed. although the vet said on the phone it would probably be ok after he started throwing up blood & gasping for breath i couldnt sit there watching him suffer. took him to the vet & luckily the bleeding stopped & he coughed up another bundle of phlemgh like blood which the vet was saying was good as obviously the blood had gone don & his lungs were trying to clear. he said if he has been quiet & lethargic basically asking what his quality of life was then it may be kinder to let him go. to be honest yes he is a bit slow & is virtually a house cat but he has the appatite of a lion so is ok. we couldnt put him to sleep on maybe a burst blood vessel in the nose. however it may be something more serious - tumour possibly. the vet said he couldnt tell we just need to monitor him especially anymore bleeding from the nose. yes we bought him home & he is now lying down quitely & thankfully not breathing awkwardly or gasping for air. however i am so scared i am going to wake in the morning & he will have passed away without anyone with him. i know he has had a good life so far but you cant help but feel so helpless & distraught. i just hope he can recover & be the grumpy old man he always has been. i guess i will sooner or later have to go to bed but i cant help watching his every movement. i want to cuddle him but the vet said to keep him as calm as possible so am keeping my distance for now. hopefully i will post tomorrow with some positive news, but wanted to post and tell somebody - hopefully that makes sense. if anyone has any spare prayers please say one for my little cat boz. lexi

You won't be the first person to have spent a night on the sofa to be near their pet when they were poorly. If it makes you feel better to stay near him, just do it. You know you've done all you can for him, and if he has reached the stage where he is just too tired to continue anymore, then he'll go knowing he was loved. If he's still got some fight left in him, then he'll be there tomorrow to scare you again another day ;-)

Either way, you've done everything you can to make him comfortable, so now do whatever you can to help yourself.

I should think if you cat is going to pop its clogs it will come and find you. I think. My cat seems to know when I am ill or upset and will come and comfort me, really freaky, like sixth sense freaky, but it is nice to know. And I like to think that if Susie (my cat) was going to die she would come and sit with me.

Also you hear stories about cats getting hurts and stuff, and always coming home to die there.

so soory to hearyour cat is unwell, at 19yrs he has had a grand old life, and obviously truly loved, heres hoping everything will be ok but if it makes you feel better then just be with him for company, sending hugs and prayers. x

If you want to gently cuddle and stroke him, and he's been used to it, do it and dam the vet. It'll be a comfort to you and puss.

I'm realy very sorry to hear about your cat.What a lucky old boy,he is though to be loved all these years by someone who is so obviously as caring as you.
You know yourself that he is very,very old.I thought I was lucky to have a cat who reached 17.Having had lots of geriatric cats over the years,my advice to you give him lots of strokes and talk to him.You'll feel better and so will he.

I had a cat that lived until it was 20. It was the perfect cat, great sense of humor and very friendly.

Had many fun times when i was younger playing hide and seek with her lol. She even used to recognize my car coming down a long road and i would wind down the passenger window and give her a lift home, haha.

Before she passed away she must have run away as she was missing for a few days and was found curled up in some bushes across a big school field.

Actually it was her birthday yesterday 1st june, and she is still missed.

Hope everything is okay.

Cats are such amazing characters, and you have probably known him longer than a lot of your friends. Just keep him company, and you will know him so well that you will know what to do for the best, whether to let him sleep or stroke his fur. Hope he makes a full recovery.

Cats do tend to know when the end is nigh, sometimes they will come to you, others want to go alone. They usually find a nice comfortable place to pass away and don't suffer.

Here's hoping he will be OK though.
