broken denby plate

Hi, last month hubby and I treated ourselves to a denby dinner set for our wedding anniversary. Have wanted one for yonks and Debenhams were doing it in the sale, 70% off and extra 10% if we got a store card on the day. We bought as much as we could afford and paid the card off when the statement came in.

Anyway, the reason we bought it is because we have always been told about the strength and durability of denby, that it would last forever etc. Obviously not meant to survive my teenagers! Son dropped a glass on the plate, the glass survived, the plate didn't. We also have cutlery marks on the plates. All in all I am quite dissappointed. Because the line is discontinued replacements are extortionate. Just wondered if anyone else had similar experiences on Denby or is it just my bad luck?

I Live near the denby factory in derbyshire and have a friend that works there,if you tell me the pattern you have i might be able to help and factory shop prices are much cheaper.
  • Wow, thank you so much. It is denby boston dinner plate. It is creamy/white in the middle with dark blue round the edge and underneath. Not boston spa. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you
  • Sorry to hear about your misfortunes. We still have the remains of a Denby gypsy dinner service from at least 25 years ago, that we still use daily - but as you probably realise I don't have any recent experience!
So many shoes, so little time....
  • Thanks Jayne, that was the sort of story I usually hear about Denby.

Denby isn't that hard wearing. I've lost count of how many pieces of Denby White we've chipped in the dishwasher.

  • Maybe that's where I'm going wrong. I thought it was dishwasher safe!
  • No really it's fine in the dishwasher.... Hang on a minute - how do you manage to chip crockery putting it in a dishwasher? I've got teenagers and even they manage to throw it in without too much trouble!! Hmmmm....

  • Mine is safe from the teenagers chipping it by putting it in the dishwasher. They don't bother!!!! :D They clear the table and leave the plates on the side. think they got a bit worried about damaging any more of Mum and dads dinner set. Still can't get over the 50p glass stayed intact and the plate worth £13 broke
  • You know that's sods law...If you'd paid 50p for the plate and £13 for the glass, it's the glass that would have gone!
