in Credit cards
I just wanted to make everyone aware of a recent issue that I have and warn others to be careful with there credit/debit cards.
I recently used my debit card in a very well known national fast food place and my order came to just over £5, as I handed the person behind the counter I noticed that the opertade then walked off WITH my debit card, she went to talk to someone - although I watched her every movement with my bank card (as the bank tells customers NOT to allow anyone to take your card out of your view) I wasnt happy at her taking my card away, she then put my card into a wireless card terminal for payment she told me to in put my pin as she went to get my order, had I have not checked it then silly women didnt press enter after putting the amount to be debited in, I inputted my PIN and a four digit sum came up ro be debited from my account:eek:
I was almost charge £**** for a £5 order
I pointed it out and it was put right but I seriously would never pay by card there again, also is the wireless terminla safe to use and input your PIN on???!!!
I somehow doubt it!!!
Be very careful with your cards, dont let anyone walk off with it, no matter what they say, where your card goes, go with it.
I hope that by posting this here I have helped people from the issue I had.:D

i've been using the wireless terminal in restaurants for years and never had any problem with it. some restaurant/merchant even made me enter the amount by myself. i've first used this wireless stuff more than 10 years ago in France.0

Interesting. It's nothing to do with wireless, but could this be used as a ploy to gain your PIN?
The operator 'accidentally' passes the terminal to you just at the point where they would normally have entered the amount, you key in your PIN where the amount should have gone, they say, 'Oh, dear, sorry, I'll void that' (which usually involves printing out a 'void' slip), and they have a record of your PIN in plain view?
Just wondered.....0 -

Good point Biggles!:T
I never thought of that, but a very good point.
I was just more angery with her for taking my card and walking off for a chat before returning, I wouldnt trust them again.
I will let everyone know what one it was, but I am not saying the name.
It starts with a B and has two words.
Make that of what you will:DDELETE ACCOUNT.

This wasn't a "mistake" by the operator, it was a "mistake" by the OP.
It's very common practice for companies (particularly in restaurants) to ask you to press "enter" to confirm the amount, and then to enter your PIN.
It's your fault if you don't read what it says on the terminal, and numptily enter your PIN too early.0 -
Haha my mum paid over £500 for a coffee once ina local place when they got it wrong and she put her PIN as the amount in (they asked her to type in her PIN, I was there!), luckily she noticed on her statement and dug the receipt out of her wallet... They refunded it all and gave her another voucher for free coffee + cake!Kavanne

I know exactly what I'm talking about.
The way the terminals work is that they require the amount to be entered then verified, and then the PIN entered and then verified.
There's no reason why the operator should, or shouldn't, press "enter" after the amount. It depends on the way they have been trained to do it.
Obviously if they expect you to check the amount and press "enter" they should say so.
But if they don't, it's the cardholder's mistake to enter the PIN at the wrong time and therefore display it to the operator. The machine's say on them "enter PIN and then press ENTER" or "enter amount and then press ENTER". You only have to read what it's saying.0 -
I've never encountered anywhere that asked me to input the amount.. the shop assistant/waiter asks me to check the amt. then press enter sometimes, or just for the PIN. But never asks me to enter the amt.
The only time I might ever enter an amount is when it says 'would you like to add a tip? Yes/No'
In my mother's case the assistant just asked her to enter her PIN, my mum trusted the assistant, but in fact the assistant had not yet input the amount so this is what it thought was her amount and then reasked her for her PIN which she duly entered as she thought she had just got it wrong once before.
You might say my mum should have checked but she had no REASON to, the assistant had (or so she thought) made it clear what my mum needed to do ('enter PIN' not just 'follow the instructions')
The Chip and PIN system isn't infallible!!Kavanne
