A few of them have come up with the uninstall action-

-Avance AC'97audio for via (R) Audio controller
    -MPU-401Compatible MIDI device
    -Standard game port
    -Uni-Modem half duplex audio device
    -USB audio device.

I have a USB turntable, plus usb leads to MP3 players if that makes any difference. Not sure which one to uninstall- presuming the USB audio device may be my turntable, and i'm presuming the gameport one wont be right either but otherwise i'm a bit stuck.

The one that you should uninstall is Avance AC'97audio for via (R) Audio controller.

Ok - I suspect if you uninstall the first of these then most of the others will ~probably~ vanish at the same time, as they are typically all served by the same hardware device.

However, now you mention the USB audio device again, I'm wondering if all that's happened is that this has inadvertently been set as your default playback device.

If you look in Control Panel, Sounds and Audio, Audio, the default playback device should be the AC97 audio device, and the default recording device should be the USB audio device (if you normally use your turntable rather than a mic).

Of course, I should have payed more attention to the turntable. Do as fwor said.

Genius. Not sure how it happened but it looks like my USB had been changed to default playback. Changed it back and all appears well. Incidentally i did uninstall it as well prior to that.

Many thanks for all the help guys, didn't want to buy new speakers and find it was something else.
  • all very helpful - well done all-it helped me too!
