Halifax Ultimate Reward A/c - changes

Received a letter today advising me of changes to this account as of 1 July

Monthly Fee - up from £10 to £12.50

Interest on arranged overdraft over £300 - up from 13.35% to 19.5%

Unsecured Personal Loan bonus - was £50 now £0

Car Insurance Discount - was 10% now 15%

Introduction of Price Promise and Purchase Protection

I had this account and used the travel insurance, RAC cover and mobile insurance. But now I got RAC in effect for £11 and annual travel insurance for £20 I cancelled the monthly fee. Just as well really!

 Does anyone know if they are changing the rate on the high interest current account too?

I've got a large overdraft on my ultimate reward account and would rather not pay the new interest rate if I can help it!

Phoned halifax today. The high interest current account rate isn't going up, it's staying at 15.9% as long as £1000 per month is paid in.

So I switched (or had the account re-designated as they call it).

4% less interest and I save the monthly fee too. Won't really miss any of the "benefits".

I've just come across the Halifax Ultimate Reward account. Given that my wife & I have joint RAC membership (expires in October), we're about to take out annual travel insurance (was quoted around £110 by the Post Office), we take out Home Emergency cover each year ... it seems like a great deal altogether, and not a bad interest rate either.

Can anyone comment on the benefits provided?

I presume that the RAC membership would be just for the bog standard? Is it possible to upgrade this to include spouse, relay ...?

Is the travel insurance comprehensive enough for a bog-standard holiday abroad? Is it as good as that offered by the Post Office, for example?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You can pay extra to get a higher RAC cover but why not go direct to RAC via Rpoints and get £22 cashback? May work out cheaper over the course of the year. As for travel insurance, I never made a claim so I don't know how good the coverage is. I am sure you will be able to find a cheaper policy than £110 if you do a search with moneysupermarket.com
  • Does anyone have the welcome pack for this account?

Ive had it for 2 months and have asked for it 6 times and its still not here.

You'd think they didnt want me to claim on the insurance benefits as i dont ahve the numbers

States this on their web site:

"Comprehensive Travel Insurance for all the family
Our Worldwide Multi-Trip Travel insurance policy includes Personal Belongings, Winter Sports and Golf Cover as standard.
    Normal underwriting conditions apply."

I'd say personal belongings should be covered - ring them up an ask them what excess there is.

It looks like a typical and full travel insurance policy to me.

Most annual policies have some limits on British trips - otherwise people could claim for anything they lost. Mine (co-op) only covers trips inside Britain that include paid accommodation of at least two nights booked in advance.
