Avira Antivir is the same i dont even notice it you just have to set the update scheduler to invisible and use Windows local security policy to suppress the update popup trying to get you to upgrade to the full version and your golden. I use other free programs to deal with the gaps and save a bundle in the process as well.

Eset along with kapersky seem to be the best options if your willing to pay looking at the data on comparison sites right now.

oh well, just downloaded eset and laptop completely froze (an i mean completely): had to resort to system restore and all is ok. bizarre, because from what i've always read it is indeed a good anti-virus - just not for my laptop :rotfl: Looks like i'll have to stick with avast: although on a number of occasions, it HAS let me down:(

Do you mean it froze while installing it or just downloading? (If installing did you uninstall Avast first?)

whilst installing: you got me thinking now ss; you are absolutely correct: even though it suggested so, I did NOT uninstall avast (I just thought it wouldn't matter really). I restarted the laptop, because it froze, and I could no nothing. Had to resort to system restore in safe mode...you got me thinking  Maybe I could try again, thanks:)

Just to let you know, you can get the full version of
    AVG security suite for 99p

I have been using it for a few weeks now and seems good, but I do
do have a powerful pc so I am not sure how much of slowdown it would
    be on a average pc

Another one for NOD32 here, but you should only ever run one antivirus product at a time.
