AVG antivir or ESET??

TRICKY TRICKY TRICKY.......
I been browsing many of the topics containing peoples suggested AV programmes as im at the stage where my Norton has expired and in the need for a new one. Theres a couple things that suprise me reading through answers, which are:
-How many seems to opt for the free AV. and hey if it works why change it
-How much bad rep the 2 'commercialized' AV programmes receive
-Finally the combined mixture of AV protective programmes ppl use

Soooooo as you can guessed from the title ive short listed it down to 3 AV programmes - AVG, Antivir and ESET (which i believe the only paid one out of the 3)
Again i realise its all down to opinions and experience your've had with them as they all pretty much are on par with each other.
Also before i download anything should i totally uninstalled Norton or Install the new AV programme first then uninstalle norton?
Any reply would be greatfully received

I use ESET and think its by far the best antivirus program out there, its uses very little system resource and in all the time I've used it I've never got an infection of any kind on my laptop. Before you install any new av software, make sure you completely uninstall Norton.

thanks, is £40 the cheapest you can get ESET do you know??

I think £40 is about the going rate but in my opinion its well worth the money

giving the ESET a months trial, on initial scan it found 2 trojans and took 33 mins to do a full scan

I have AVG on two desktops and a laptop, and have never had any viruses etc. I have used it for years and it has not cost me a penny, I can not see the point of paying, when you can get as good free, Bert

I disagree, AVG is decent but it's not as good as Eset. I had AVG installed for quite a while and moved to NOD32 straight from that and then to Smart Security. Definitely a vast improvement and worth the money just for the much less use of resources and unintrusiveness alone. I have seen AVG unable to pick up viruses but it is better than Norton/McAfee at detection.

I recently had an infection of the vundo virus and McAfee was utterly useless. Never even noticed it. Spybot S&D found it but couldn't get rid and the only thing that got rid was the free Windows Live OneCare safety scanner online, which my local PC shop recommended as a last resort. Sorry, slightly off topic but I thought I'd say it anyway. So it therefore might be worth looking into the paid for Windows OneCare security package; just a thought.

Definately ESET, I literally have to check its working, because it's so unobtrusive, and updates throughout the day, 2or 3 times sometimes.

I do kinda feel guilty for persuading people to part with their money for Eset.
But at least anyone can give the trial a go and decide for themselves.
