But it is the other facility which is fixed in a std Visa or Meastro card and that is 100% auth for every transaction, the floor limit feature is set to 0 so if for example you go to use the card at a train station or want to pay for your ticket on the train then you are stuffed. The C/G type allow offline payment.

Yeah my HSBC Maestro is basically a Switch card, I've used it to purchase train tickets before where in the past I have been unable to do so because I held a kiddy Solo card.

I've been told by a HSBC lady that they only issue Switch cards to people with agreed overdraft facility.

I think you must be confused to think you've been upgraded, but no longer have a cheque guarantee card. And I don't believe that any bank is removing cheque guarantee from customers without good reason.

Switch doesn't exist any more, as it's been superseded by Maestro.

Trust me I've been upgraded, otherwise I would not have £1,000 interest-free overdraft.

Sorry for calling the Maestro card Switch, they're basically the same and the bank staff still refer Maestro as Switch so I followed their route. UK issued Maestro cards are still processed as Switch by train operators and some retailer.

A good reason for removing cheque guarantee is that *most* people barely use that facility and almost all high street shops no longer accept cheques.
