Do you subscribe to the Telephone Preference Service (TPS)? It's free and should stop (most of) these sort of nuisance calls.

Most mobile operators do offer a call blocking service, but googling seems to imply that it relies on you contacting customer services and requesting each number be set up (in the UK at least). Only problem then is the caller knows they have been blocked and might just ring from a different line or otherwise carry on harassing you. Seems a bit of an effort on your part when it would probably be easier to register with the TPS and shout at any company that ignores the list (can also be quite a good vent with a bit of practice - "You're not from <company A>, you're from <company B>. How did you get my number? Let me speak to someone who can tell me that! Don't ever ring me again!" etc...).

And there are other options. How would you feel about installing a silent ring tone (reasonably easily done for free) and add them as a contact so that when they ring you don't hear them call?

And someone else in google simply answers and puts the phone on the side so they don't have to speak to them or put up with the phone ringing. They should get the message eventually.
