Going to USA - Do not want phone to pick up on US networks

Thanks. But that is exactly what it is. A music only mode. I want full use of camera, alarms, etc.

But surely if I don't select one of the US networks, it will still stay logged in on the Orange one, and hence I will not receive a signal(?) which is exactly what I want. (I may only have the phone on a couple of mins a day just to set the alarm).

Alternatively, I have got an old expired SIM and could use that. However, purely from a theoretical viewpoint, I am wondering what would happen if I set roaming to manual, and then refrain from selecting one of the US networks I am offered.

As noone has mentioned Call Barring....

You should be able to change the call barring setting from your phone (I can on my Motorola V500). It allows you to disable incoming calls "When Roaming", which is what you are going to be doing. This means whenever it is on a non-home network (ie not in the UK), it will not receive calls.

If you can't find this setting on your phone, try the relevant "Using your phone" section on the Orange site* or ring customer services and they should be able to enable the setting on your number.

And as others have noticed, receiving text messages is free and call barring should be able to assuage your worries regarding incoming phone calls.

How do I use Call Barring?

To clarify:

If your network search is set to manual before you depart, then you'll be asked to select network when you get there. Don't do anything.

But if it's on automatic search when you arrive, then it will log on. Then a manual search will offer a list; if you then do nothing and exit the menu, you're still in automatic mode and registered on a network
