Finding a decent rented room ..

hi,

I was just wondering how other people have come across their "good" houseshare. I am sick of living where I am ... sick of one person hogging the tv for 16 hrs a day, sick of the mess and having to do all the cleaning myself...

So I am on the lookout for another place... I have emailed all the suitable ones on the spareroom site and one has got back to me so far and I am going to do the same with another site I know of...

The thing is EVERY single time I arrange to see somewhere I email them with a short list of questions which I am careful to make sure arent covered in the info on the site, they then ignore the questions, say I can see it anytime, arrange a time, turn up late saying they were caught up elsewhere and then are really avoidant about answering questions about the inportant things like housemates etc.

I dont want to have to move in somewhere again, go through all that hassle again of moving my stuff (i dont drive) to find out that its unsuitable again. I am not hugely fussy before anyone says that I am, but I want somewhere which is reasonably quiet, clean with "normal" people. I am currently paying £375 to live in what amounts to a building site with flatmates I swear the LL just pulled off the street.

Try to find a room in a house where the landlord still lives and rents out rooms.

I rent out rooms in my house and I am very fussy about who I rent to. I also spell out very clearly rules about noise, hygiene, etc etc. I think that if you have a resident landlord he/she is more likely to be particular about who they let to.

thats an idea ... it just worries me ... it would be like living with your boss almost ...

It also worries me that things would have to be done There way - like if there was any debate over something (we had an arguement about closing the lounge door at night with one of the housemates) then its the LL which is bound to have the last say regardless. Has anyone any experience of living in these type of houses?

No don't this is why it's a disaster living with a resident LL you have to meet their exact definition of what's right and guess where the final say lies, very few LLs like this do it for social reasons/because they like the company - they resent having you there but are prepared to do it ON THEIR terms because you're a cheap way to pay the mortgage....

You also have less tenancy rights in this set up although generally easier to up sticks and leave quicker so a goer for a few months on secodment situation....

Try looking for similar lifestyled people, ask friends to look on work notice boards if they work at places with professional, full-time people in your age group, try staff notice boards where people have similar hours, reasons to be in rented, academic staff at the local uni, hospitals, graduate schemes...
