Try to find a room in a house where the landlord still lives and rents out rooms.
I rent out rooms in my house and I am very fussy about who I rent to. I also spell out very clearly rules about noise, hygiene, etc etc. I think that if you have a resident landlord he/she is more likely to be particular about who they let to.
I did that in Portsmouth - I loved it. There where about 5 others + the landlords family in the house but everyone seemed to have been vetted well (i guess due to the fact he lived there) and so i really enjoyed my time there, felt safe and comfortable there. He never judged me on anything - even when I moaned at the internet go awol (which technically wasnt his fault) he just did his best to sort it asap as he understood i needed it - so there are great people out there to live with, honest. Good luck0 -
we always organise getting new people into our houseshare (bit of a pain but much better in the long run as we get control over who moves in!). just thought i'd say from the other side of it that i have had lots of emails in the past when a room is free and i can't always find time to reply with a lot of info. there are also a lot of people who arrange viewings and stand you up, or want to take the room without visiting - it's a two way thing; we want to meet people in advance and also get them to meet us. anyone who refuses to stay for a cup of tea is automatically out!
we make it clear the house is kept clean and that shared rooms shouldn't be taken over by anyone (with stuff left lying around or by watching tv all the time). we also tend to prefer people 23+, just to make sure they're past the student lifestyle!!!
another thing to look at is the length of the contract. we don't like people coming in for less than 9 months because this is our home, not just a rented place for a short time. we don't make people commit to that but it's those kind of things in an advert that might be worth looking for!!
(and we tend to use easyroomate and gumtree as they get the most replies!):happyhear0 -
www.sparerooms.co.uk is a really useful for both landlords and tenantsStatistics are like a lampost to a drunken man...more for leaning on than for illumination

Oh Jen, you sound like exactly the kind of housemate I'm looking for (but never can find!) - you're not in the Manchester area by any chance are you?!
On the subject of easyroomate - I am so hacked off with this site. In previous years it's been great and I've found some fabulous housemates. However I just re-joined this year, paid my subs for premium membership and wondered why after three days not a soul had rung me (in previous years my phone rang off the hook).
It seems now only premium members can view contact details (phone no etc). It used to be that by being a premium member myself, even the basic members could access my details. This is a huge blow... as hardly any prospective tenants seem to pay for the prem. membership. Grrrr!
What are these other sites for finding flatmates? I'll sign up to them all!! I need to fill two rooms by the middle of juneWins for 2009: Nada, Zip, Zilch0 -
I used spareroom.co.uk , they have a policy where your contact details are free after 7 days but if you change a single thing the clock is restarted. Mine was up for 3 days with no contact. I then paid £7.50 to upgrade for a week and the room went the following night, upgrading makes it free for the otherside.Lets get this straight. Say my house is worth £100K, it drops £20K and I complain but I should not complain when I actually pay £200K via a mortgage:rolleyes:0

barnaby-bear wrote: »No don't this is why it's a disaster living with a resident LL you have to meet their exact definition of what's right and guess where the final say lies, very few LLs like this do it for social reasons/because they like the company - they resent having you there but are prepared to do it ON THEIR terms because you're a cheap way to pay the mortgage....
Well I have been letting 3 rooms for 4 years. Of my 3 present lodgers, one will have been here 3 years in July, one 2 years in August and the third is just coming up to 12 months. The first lodger I had - a 27 year old mature student, stayed for the whole 3 years of his course.
All have previously shared before and like the original OP have experienced inconsiderate and antisocial behaviour from their fellow sharers. They are all extreamely happy and confortable and would not have stayed all this time if they were not.
Sharing can be an extremely stressful experience if any of your fellow sharers behave in a selfish or anti -social way, as the OP has found.
A few clear rules concerning, bathroom and kitchen hygiene noise etc ensure that we are all able to live in harmony. If people dont want to live in a civilised way they dont come to live here and my lodgers are all extreamely thankful that I make this clear from the start.
I realise that this is not the environment that would suite everyone, however from what the OP has said,
"I am sick of living where I am ... sick of one person hogging the tv for 16 hrs a day, sick of the mess and having to do all the cleaning myself...
I want somewhere which is reasonably quiet, clean with "normal" people. I am currently paying £375 to live in what amounts to a building site with flatmates I swear the LL just pulled off the street."
I think it may suite her very well0 -
Spareroom.co.uk it is then! Thanks folksWins for 2009: Nada, Zip, Zilch0

I currently live with my landlord, but that's only because I shared a rented place with him for 6mths 1st. He's a little uptight about the cleaning etc, but then he just tends to do a lot of it himself which is great as the other 2 lads aren't that keen (I'm female living with 3 lads). Have to say it generally works well as long as your laid back and and make allowances.
But just in case maybe you should get a tv in your room, this gives you a bit of time out when needed.
Oh and I find Gumtree is very good, simple as well as phone numbers are ussually displayed.0 -
